_- Matt Elliott looks ahead to Leicester City’s trip to Chelsea on Saturday_- The pair meet at Stamford Bridge for matchday four in the Premier League- He also reflected on the Foxes’ Carabao Cup progression in midweek- City overcome Stockport County on penalties to book a place in round three
Although yet to win in the top-flight campaign, drawing against Brentford before defeats to Arsenal and Southampton, Brendan Rodgers’ side did progress in the Carabao Cup in midweek, beating Stockport County on penalties after a goalless draw during normal time of the second round tie.
“Leicester got through, objective achieved,” the former Foxes defender told LCFC TV. “Looking at the rhythm of the game, first half, I don’t think there was enough. Second half, I don’t think there was too much more you could ask for.
“There were a few ricochets which could have gone Leicester’s way, there was a clearance off the line, one or two shots wide and a few decent saves. It was a bit more like it, they were applying the pressure. It didn’t quite go their way, but they were ultimately successful.
“I thought it was an improvement in the second half. It wasn’t the hat full of goals to really improve confidence for the weekend, and there’s still a few questions there about how it’s going to be going forward, but it’s a step in the right direction.”
It’s Chelsea up next on Saturday afternoon (3pm BST kick-off) as attention turns back to the league, with the trip to Stamford Bridge representing an opportunity to produce an improved performance, albeit against high-quality opposition.
Thomas Tuchel’s side have won just one of their opening three Premier League fixtures, losing to Leeds United last time out after drawing with Tottenham Hotspur, following an opening day victory at Everton.
“Saturday is going to be a different entity all together,” Elliott admitted. “I’m not quite sure what Chelsea team or performance Leicester are walking into. You wouldn’t have foreseen their result against Leeds at the weekend.
“It’s still very early days. It’s still a little bit of a bedding in process. I understand the doubts and the worries, that’s only natural. It’s going to be very interesting viewing, that’s for sure.
“There are other teams in a worse predicament than Leicester right now. Having said that, it does need to improve. Brendan Rodgers is as aware of that as anyone. There’s been that feeling of frustration in the close season.
“You are always in a precarious position in the Premier League. In a couple of games, the whole scenario can change. People are looking ahead to the fixtures as well, but it’s a missed opportunity because we might need a few points with the run of games coming up.
“Chelsea, Man United, Brighton, Tottenham. The way those teams are going, it’s going to be a tough proposition. Let’s have a look at the picture after seven games to make a more considered judgement. Leicester might surprise a few people in the forthcoming fixtures.”
While sitting 19th in the standings and underperforming, Elliott is confident that the team are not far away from piecing together the type of performance level that will lead to improved league results.
“It’s disappointing and certain aspects need looking at,” the 53-year-old added. “Of course, things need addressing and repairing to a degree, and developing in other areas. But at the same time, it’s realistic to say it’s a little bit early to be getting too upset. It’s a concern, it’s a worry, but it’s three games in.
“You look at the games and Leicester have not been terrible, they haven’t been getting beat four, five or six. There are areas to look at, but there are also things that aren’t too far wrong.
“At the weekend, without having that cutting edge, Leicester played reasonably well for 55 minutes or so. Against Brentford, it was similar, good for an hour. Against Arsenal, they put up a valiant performance. They weren’t the better team, but there were good signs from the performance as well.”
