Leicester City have confirmed the 12-man squad they have taken to the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup, a renowned six-a-side Under-19s tournament being staged in Germany this week.
Trevor Peake, the Academy manager, has named several familiar names from the Premier League U18 squad with Layton Ndukwu and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, goal-scorers in the FA Youth Cup third round last month, among those to have travelled to Stuttgart.
Ndukwu and Dewsbury-Hall got on the scoresheet as the young Foxes defeated Leyton Orient 3-1 at King Power Stadium and Peake has expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to excel against strong opposition this week.
With 18-minute, six-a-side matches against Schalke, Rosenborg and RB Leipzig being staged within two hours of each other on the opening day, Peake’s men will have to recover quickly from each clash if they are to progress to the intermediate round later in the day on Friday.
Leicester will benefit from the invaluable experience of Development Squad regulars Alex Pascanu and Admiral Muswke, too, and Peake says the squad as a whole are determined to give a good account of themselves on the continent this week.
“It will be a new test for most of our players,” he said. “One or two of them may have been to the Hong Kong Citi Soccer Sevens in the past but it will be more compact in Germany.
“The intensity of the competition is evident from the clips we’ve seen meaning we’ll have to try to take more of a breather when we’ve got the ball.
“We’re very confident about the players we are taking and we believe we can give a good account of ourselves and do the Club proud.”
