One of the only full-contact disability sports, Wheelchair Rugby was first recognised as a full medal sport at the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia and has since been an integral part of the games.
Played by two teams of four, who aim to score by carrying the ball across the opposing team’s line, it’s fast paced and violent with players competing in specially-designed, manual wheelchairs.
All competing athletes were either born with physical disabilities, have suffered illness which has affected their mobility or experienced life-changing injuries through accidents or while serving in the armed forces.
The 2019 Vichai Trophy will be contested by World Champions Japan, Great Britain, Canada and France. Players were announced earlier this month and includes a squad of 10 athletes from around the UK including three members of the Leicester Tigers Wheelchair Rugby squad; Gavin Walker, Jamie Stead and Leicester University student, Nick Cummins.
Sponsored by King Power, the three-day tournament marks an important performance opportunity for Great Britain ahead of the 2019 European Championships and Leicester City fans can get an amazing 50 per cent off all advance tickets for all games!
