- LCFC Women sit 12th in the Barclays Women’s Super League- The Foxes are next in WSL action against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday 15 January- Willie Kirk says the squad are focusing hard on their game model they are trying to develop- Plenty of work will go in at Belvoir Drive over the Christmas break, the manager adds
Following three postponed games to Sunderland, Liverpool and Manchester City respectively, the winter break appears with Leicester yet to reach the halfway point of the season.
However, this news will come as a comfort for the Foxes who are yet to add a point to the Barclays Women's Super League standings, while they maintain the chance of qualifying from Group B of the Continental Tyres League Cup, with one win from their first two games. Prior to the restart on Saturday 15 January, when Leicester welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to King Power Stadium, Kirk is enthusiastic about enjoying the festive period, but is wary of the challenge still at hand. “There's a lot of work to be done,” he told LCFC TV. “I think the break is needed by everyone. It's been an emotional six months, a tough six months and everybody needs that time off. But there's a lot of planning to go ahead. “We are very much focusing on our game model and how we want to be playing and seen and we're working hard on how we analyse and dictate that to measure our success in terms of what that looks like on the pitch.
“Every game is a winnable game in the WSL, but every game is also a losable game. And results have shown that over the season. Obviously from a Leicester point of view, but right throughout the league.”
Making the trips to the North East and Merseyside, before late decisions were made to postpone the games, was a spanner in the works for Kirk who is focusing hard on trying to put some points on the board.
But with the safety of the players at the forefront of everyone’s mind, the Scotsman said his coaching staff and team made the most of the unfortunate situation.
“Yes, it's tough," he admitted. “You normally expect to deal with maybe one postponed game a season, not two in the same week, especially once you've travelled and had your pre-match meal and then it's called off, so a little bit frustrating.
“We travelled back from Sunderland as soon as it was called off and we trained here (at Belvoir Drive) at 9pm because we felt that was the right thing to do in terms of the preparation building into the game against the Black Cats.
“It was like a throwback to the old days of women's football when you train two or three evenings a week!”
The freezing weather conditions do however provide an opportunity for Kirk, as he is now able to spend more time with the squad before kicking on in the New Year, and the manager is keen to show what his style of football is all about.
“Nothing is dead until it's dead," the 44-year-old added. “So, it doesn't matter what competition we're in, we want to win the game that's in front of us.
“We’ll enjoy ourselves before we come back on 27 December. I think there'll be a spring in everybody's step and we'll be looking to have a very successful and a really positive second half of season.”
