_- Leicester City’s Premier League fixture against Arsenal is dedicated to the Football v Homophobia initiative__- Foxes Pride met City’s first team squad at LCFC Training Ground earlier this month_- Members of the Club’s LGBTQI+ supporter group spoke about the issues they face and how footballers can be allies
An initiative that challenges discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, Football v Homophobia was formed by the Justin Campaign in 2010, a group founded in 2008 to demonstrate that 10 years after Justin Fashanu’s tragic suicide in 1998, homophobia is still hugely prevalent in both grassroots and professional football.
Branding will be visible throughout King Power Stadium on the day, with City’s players to warm-up in Football v Homophobia t-shirts.
The Club’s LGBTQI+ supporter group, Foxes Pride, will also have an information stall in the Foxes Fanstore and will be invited for a photo opportunity with the players ahead of the game.
Following the match, Foxes Pride will welcome Gay Gooners, Arsenal’s LGBTQI+ fan group, to the Reception Lounge on Filbert Way for a celebratory event as part of their wider support for Football v Homophobia.
Earlier this month, the Club hosted Football v Homophobia’s Month of Action launch event at King Power Stadium, where more than 40 guests from the LGBTQI+ community gathered to share ideas on how clubs, fans, players and footballing authorities can focus their efforts on LGBTQI+ inclusion.
Led by Foxes legend Matt Elliott, two panel discussions took place, with conversations focusing on The Need to Take Action - Tackling LGBTQI+-phobia in men’s football: What actually works? and Out on the Pitch - The experiences of out LGBTQI+ footballers: What are we learning?
Furthermore, a trio of group members from Foxes Pride were invited to LCFC Training Ground last week to meet the Club’s first team players and to share their stories with them.
Graeme Smith, Rishi Madlani and Karen Laurie all spoke about their experiences and detailed some of the challenges LGBTQI+ supporters face in a football setting.
The discussion was also an opportunity for the players to learn more about the group and to understand the important role they have as allies to the LGBTQI+ community.
Should you experience any form of discrimination in a Leicester City setting, please contact help@lcfc.co.uk or call 0344 815 5000 (option 4).
Additionally, you can also report any form of discrimination or hate crime by texting the word ‘FOXES’ to 60066.
