The recently launched LCFC Sports Turf Academy completed a programme of pitch improvements at local club Birstall United Juniors as part of ongoing work to support Leicestershire’s grassroots football community.

To celebrate, Birstall hosted a football tournament for junior teams to participate and enjoy their new and improved grass pitches.

The Sports Turf Academy prepared the surfaces for the event, with a pitch cut and line marking taking place on Friday, to give it a professional feel ahead of the Under-7s and Under-8s tournament the following day.

The event was attended by two former Leicester City captains, Steve Walsh and Matt Elliott, as well as Club mascot Filbert Fox, who all joined in by posing for photographs with participants and taking in some of the matches from the sidelines.

The Club's Supporter Engagement department had a stall at the tournament, which including fun-themed football activities, with all funds raised from the inflatables being donated back to Birstall United Juniors.

Foxes legend Elliott commented: “It’s brilliant to get back out into the community and see what a difference the Club is making to local teams at grassroots level.

“Especially after the last 18 months, it’s great to see so many kids enjoying themselves and getting active, because that’s what it’s all about. And they’re able to do that on quality pitches here thanks to the work of the Sports Turf Academy.”

The programme continues Leicester City’s commitment to the grassroots game, with a new database providing a host of benefits for registered clubs.
