Leicester City
Despite a positive opening period for Leicester City, Manchester United recorded a convincing 3-0 Premier League victory at King Power Stadium on Sunday.
The Foxes matched Jose Mourinho’s men for 40 minutes of the first period and had a huge opportunity to go in front with 19 minutes gone and while he connected with Jamie Vardy’s flick-on, Wes Morgan saw his header blocked by Paul Pogba.
A poor challenge from Juan Mata on Vardy followed, but after going in two-footed on City’s No.9, the midfielder was only shown a yellow card and would later deal damage to the Leicester back line.
It was Henrikh Mkhitaryan who did exactly that first, though. The Armenia ace’s deft touch carved open the City defence, before he raced onto the ball and slotted in on 42 minutes past Kasper Schmeichel, who had earlier brilliantly denied Marcus Rashford.
Another goal arrived just two minutes later, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic positioned himself well in the City box to convert Antonio Valencia’s low cross.
Claudio Ranieri, who made two changes to the side that lost to Burnley, introduced Andy King and Demarai Gray at the break, but with just five minutes of the second half played, Mata extended the visiting side’s lead.
Gray caused the Manchester United defence problems at times in the second half, but Mourinho’s men were incredibly disciplined and remained compact when defending to half any form of Leicester comeback.
Major moment
Those two goals in two minutes proved vital for Manchester United. Up until that point City looked well organised and comfortable at the back and there was little that swung the game in favour of the visitors. With some luck, Wes Morgan would have earlier been on the scoresheet.
In truth, it boiled down to the Red Devils taking their chances at the right times. Juan Mata’s goal almost immediately after the break was a blow too, but Man Utd’s two first-half strikes were without doubt the turning point for Jose Mourinho’s men.
Who impressed?
Wilfred Ndidi again performed well in the centre of midfield, but the creativity of Demarai Gray should not go unnoticed. Introduced at half-time, the winger grew into the game and caused plenty of problems for the opposition defence with his neat footwork and pace.
Where do we stand?
After two of the bottom three won this weekend, the defeat to Manchester United leaves Leicester City in 16th, a point above the drop. Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Hull City occupy the relegation zone’s three positions, while Swansea City and Middlesbrough share the same amount of points – 21 – as the Foxes.
Coming up…
A brief pause in Premier League proceedings follows, as City contest an Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round replay with Derby County on Wednesday evening at King Power Stadium (7.45pm kick-off). Four days later, we head to Swansea City for a big game at the Liberty Stadium.
