- LCFC Women were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal on Friday evening- Frida Maanum scored the only goal of the game at Meadow Park- The Foxes are 10th in the Barclays Women’s Super League with three games left- You can see that we’re developing, says Janina Leitzig
On Friday evening, Leicester fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Arsenal after a 64th-minute strike from Frida Maanum was enough to settle a positive scoreline for the Gunners. Following the loss, Leitzig spoke to LCFC TV and explained her thoughts on the performance, including a first-half penalty save from Katie McCabe. “Arsenal are a good team,” the German ‘keeper stated. “Obviously they had the penalty and some other dangerous situations, but I think the team defended really well so we’re disappointed with the loss.
“We analysed their penalty routines, and what to expect before the game, but also my feeling was to dive to my bottom right and I’m pleased I did!
“It’s a good feeling to save a penalty, especially since it was so early in the game. I’m disappointed we couldn’t keep hold of the clean sheet, but we played so well that there are definitely positives to take.”
With four wins since the start of the New Year, City have clawed back a seven-point deficit on their way to lifting themselves off the bottom of the WSL.
Currently two points ahead of Reading in 12th place, the Bayern Munich loanee explains how she is enjoying her football in the East Midlands and is looking forward to the rest of the 2022/23 campaign.
She added: “Each week you can see how much we’re developing, and it’s a nice process that’s going on, and I’m enjoying my time with Leicester and the game time I’m getting with these players.
“We’ve put in some really good performances in the last few weeks, but we know how tight it is at the bottom of the table, so it’s important that we keep the level high, but everyone believes that we can.
“Chelsea will be another tough game, but if we defend like we did today then I think it’ll be a tough game for them, and we’re all looking forward to facing them next week.”
