Some 39 years ago, on 13 August, 1984, two football matches were staged at Filbert Street to commemorate Leicester City’s centenary.

The first game of the evening was between a City side from the 1960s playing against their counterparts from the 1970s.

This was followed by the main event of the evening, a match between Gordon Milne’s First Division Leicester side and Sir Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen, who dominated Scottish football in the 1980s.

Aberdeen were the current Scottish champions and Scottish Cup holders. They had also won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and the UEFA Super Cup a year earlier, as well as the Scottish Cup in 1982 and 1983. They also went on to win the Scottish league again nine months later.

The game ended in a 1-1 draw with Steve Lynex’s 38th-minute penalty being equalised by Eric Black’s goal for the visitors in the second half.

To commemorate the occasion, Aberdeen presented City with this glass bowl engraved ‘AFC’ standing on a plinth bearing the inscription ‘Leicester City Football Club 1884-1984 from Aberdeen Football Club’.
