As a result of City’s trophy winning achievements in recent years, many fans have responded by creating their own mementoes. Lifelong Leicester fan Calum Westwood is no exception. Over the years, his hobby has been to paint numerous Subbuteo models to reflect Foxes exploits, for himself and his father.
These include the 1997 League Cup-winning squad featuring his childhood hero Steve Walsh.
One of Calum’s tributes to Leicester City Football Club is a three piece framed set of 60 Subbuteo figures customised to represent the Club’s main home and away shirt designs.
The first framed display (1884-1972), includes, among others, Leicester Fosse shirts such the original black shirt with the blue sash, the chocolate brown and light blue halved shirt and the dark blue shirt with light blue sleeves.
The blue and white striped shirt from the post-First World War era also features.
A variety of blue, yellow, red, white as well as the famous green shirt with yellow stripes, make up the 20 figures representing the 1972-1996 period. The third display takes the story up until 2016, culminating in the strips from the Premier League-winning season.
To celebrate winning the Premier League, Calum also painstakingly re-moulded standard Subbuteo models of each of the players into well-known action poses captured on camera, before applying the kits and the players’ names.
This display was part of the ‘Fearless Foxes’ Exhibition at the New Walk Museum which has attracted over 100,000 visitors in 2016.
