- Brendan Rodgers confirms James Maddison and Ricardo Pereira are doubts for Leicester City- The Foxes welcome Leeds United to King Power Stadium on Saturday (12:30pm kick-off)- Maddison's issue is 'lower back, higher hamstring' while Ricardo's is also hamstring-related- Rodgers also discussed the positive impact Jamie Vardy's return has had on City
Maddison emerged from the bench during Tuesday's 2-0 Premier League victory over Burnley at Turf Moor, while Ricardo started that clash, but was forced to withdraw at half-time. Leeds, under new manager Jesse Marsch, visit Filbert Way for a 12:30pm kick-off on Saturday afternoon. Rodgers said following the win in Lancashire that Ricardo's issue was a hamstring complaint, while Maddison's injury is in a similar area. Both will be monitored before the weekend and, if not available for that, could be an option in next week's UEFA Europa Conference League tie against Rennes. "We’ve got a couple of issues with Ricardo and James Maddison," the Foxes manager confirmed at LCFC Training Ground on Friday. "We’ll just have to monitor that, whether they’re going to be ready for the game tomorrow. If not, then hopefully next week. It's very frustrating for both players.
"James’ impact in the game [at Burnley] was fantastic and his run of form, scoring and creating goals, has been great. Ricky has been troubled by one or two set-backs since he came back from his long-term [ACL] injury. It’s a case of trying to manage that and seeing where it is.
"We’ll give them every chance, but they're doubts for tomorrow.
"[For Maddison, it's a] lower back, higher hamstring injury. Like I say, if it’s not tomorrow, hopefully next week. It’s very frustrating I have to say because it feels like we’re always trying to patch up the team and playing players out of position and having to keep doing that. It’s where it's at.
"It’s just been unfortunate. Players are on their way back. We’re starting to see more fluidity in the team and how we've been with these players coming back. We have to manage it the very best we can so they can get back sooner rather than later."
Jamie Vardy, on the other hand, registered an assist and a goal during his 18-minute cameo at Burnley. Rodgers, who was initially asked about the possible effectiveness of his playing style against Leeds, is just thrilled to have City's No.9 back in action after a hamstring injury of his own. "Whatever team we were going to play, it wouldn’t have mattered [who the opposition is], we’re just happy to have Jamie back," the Northern Irishman said. "He looks fresh, he looks fit. Whether he’ll last the whole game or not remains to be seen, but it’s great to have him back and available and looking fresh.
"You can see what we’ve missed as a team. That movement, that energy, that game understanding and cuteness in the game... it makes us a better team. He's a natural goalscorer. He obviously works at his game. He’s a top professional player. He’s very astute in the game. He studies the game. He’s very clever.
"He picks up on things within the game. He’s such a bright mind. He’s sharp, he’s thinking, he’s looking for ways to get in and then he has all types of finishes. He can attack the ball, he has a lovely soft finish if he has to. He's got every type of finish that you want.
"There’s no doubt over these last number of years, he’s been one of the world’s best at timing of movement in behind a back line and finishing. He’s got an in-built brain for the game. He works tirelessly at his game and he has a hunger to keep proving a point and we benefit from that at Leicester."
