_- Leicester will qualify for the Continental Tyres League Cup quarter-finals by avoiding defeat to Birmingham- City face the Barclays FA Women's Super League outfit at Damson Park on Wednesday (2pm kick-off)_- The Foxes defeated Blackburn Rovers 5-2 in their opening Group E fixture in Quorn- Live match updates will be available via LCFC Women's official social media accounts
With LCFC Women travelling to the second city for a midweek cup clash, LCFC.com provides the lowdown on City's opponents, the current state of play and how the form table looks.
Both teams are locked on three points after matchday one, with top spot in the group automatically qualifying for the knockout stages. A win or a draw on Wednesday will secure qualification, while City could still progress as one of two best runners-up, should they lose.
The Foxes Camp
City defeated Blackburn Rovers 5-2 to get their cup campaign up and running in an entertaining tie at Farley Way Stadium. Natasha Flint (2), Charlie Devlin and Paige Bailey-Gayle were all on the scoresheet before Kayleigh McDonald's own goal.
And Leicester made it four successive wins in all competitions with a comfortable 3-0 victory over London Bees on Sunday, moving the Foxes into top spot of the FA Women's Championship table for the very first time, thanks to goals from Flint, Bailey-Gayle and Millie Farrow.
Three To Watch
Forward Claudia Walker is in fine scoring form for the Blues, netting six times in all competitions this season, including the winner against arch-rivals Aston Villa and the only goal in Birmingham's opening Conti Cup fixture against Blackburn. The 24-year-old, who has been capped by England at Under-17s, Under-19s and Under-23s level, joined the club from Everton in 2019 following a successful loan spell.
Blues goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, now a full England international, has once again been called up to the Lionesses' latest training camp. Her recent club form, which includes three clean sheets in the last five league games, has more than justified the 20-year-old's place as No.1. Despite going on to lose 3-0, Hampton's penalty save against Arsenal on Sunday earned plenty of plaudits.
Scotland international Christie Murray, who operates in a No.10 position or further back in midfield, is key to how Carla Ward’s side play. She was named co-captain at the start of the season and has played every minute of City’s 2020-21 league campaign so far, scoring once. Signed from Liverpool in August 2020 after a two-year spell on Merseyside, the 30-year-old is an experienced campaigner who previously turned out for Glasgow City, Doncaster Rovers Belles, Celtic, Bristol and Arsenal.
Opposition Form Guide
Carla Ward's Birmingham lie seventh in the Barclays FA Women's Super League table, with nine points from eight games, following a run of positive results.
Although the Blues lost 3-0 away at Arsenal last time out, Reading, Bristol City and Aston Villa have all been beaten without conceding a goal in recent weeks.
The 4-0 away win over the Robins was a particularly impressive display from the Blues, who lost their first three league matches - to Brighton & Hove Albion, Manchester United and Chelsea.
The Midlanders edged past Blackburn Rovers in their opening Conti Cup group fixture, winning 1-0 at Bamber Bridge thanks to Claudia Walker's late strike.
Talking Points
LCFC Women manager Jonathan Morgan commented: "We’ll probably look to rest a few for the Birmingham game, with the squad depth that we have. It’s a hard one because we know we can go through in the Conti Cup for the first time as well, so we’re going to take that one very seriously."
Birmingham City manager Carla Ward told bcfc.com: “Wednesday gives us a chance to get some fresh legs out there. The results in these three games [Arsenal, Everton and Man City] isn’t important, but the performance is.”
Last Time Out
The two sides have met twice before in the group stage of the Conti Cup, with Birmingham coming out on top on both occasions, most recently in last season's competition.
Despite Lachante Paul’s well-taken penalty pulling a goal back, braces for Rachel Williams and Lucy Staniforth, as well as Adrienne Jordan's strike, saw the Blues on their way to a 5-1 victory in Quorn, on 20 October 2019.
