Elliott - a brace-scoring captain in the League Cup Final of 2000 and promotion-winning skipper in 2002 - joined Dan Bates in the studio for the weekly 30-minute preview show.
As well as analysing City's 2-1 win at AEK Athens in the UEFA Europa League, Elliott also looked ahead to an intriguing visit to Elland Road on Monday (8pm GMT kick-off). City's squad depth comes to the fore
Matt Elliott said: “There’s been a lot of talk, even in the close season, about how tough the campaign could have been. They started off the season in fine fettle and then a couple of defeats, but they’ve turned it around again with three wins, two of them being in Europe. The injuries are still there, but the depth of the squad has been proven. Whatever side Leicester puts out, it’s a strong one, and the results have reflected that.”
A busy schedule of fixtures
Matt Elliott said: “The run of the games looked quite difficult, with Arsenal between two European encounters, followed by Leeds and Wolves. They are all difficult fixtures at the best of times, but winnable ones for a team like Leicester. They’ve shown their capabilities. If you approach a sequence of games with trepidation, it’s going to have a negative effect, but the manager has trust in the players and rightly so. The players have confidence too.”
Leicester's perfect start in Europe
Matt Elliott said: “You can’t ask for more, really. A few goals in the bargain as well. They’ll be disappointed to have conceded against Athens, but that’s a minor issue in the grander scale of things. They were deserved winners and they had the measure of their opponents, pretty much from the off. There were one or two moments in both halves, which was down to them maybe taking their eye off the ball, but they were the stronger of the two teams.”
Picking up results, despite injuries
Matt Elliott said: “There’s a good balance and a variety of players who can step in and players are usually replaced by players equally as capable and that’s a great feeling to have. It’s something you strive for as a coach in terms of developing your squad. They’re along the way to doing that at a very high level. The injuries are to very significant players, but it’s not effecting the performances or results, of late, and that’s a real confidence builder.”
Assessing Leeds
Matt Elliott said: “It’s a Premier League encounter. Leeds, in their short time in the division, have already proved themselves very worthy opponents, but Leicester will be confident too. Each game brings its own challenges and its own tactical ways of looking at it. The manager will relish the opportunity of going up against Marcelo Bielsa. Much has been made of his detail and depth in the game. Both managers have put their mentality on their teams.”
Bamford's excellent form
Matt Elliott said: “He is obviously flying and it's nice to see for him. A player like [Patrick] Bamford, he's had varying degrees of success throughout his career and it's been a bit of a bumpy ride for him at times. He's always been a good player and, for whatever reason, playing under Bielsa and in Leeds' style of football, it suits him. He looks fitter, stronger and more aggressive and that would help any player. He's a big cog in the wheel that is Leeds United.”
