As the Emirates FA Cup holders look to add a fourth League Cup to the Club's honours list, they must first plot a route past Gary Rowett's Lions, who are unbeaten in three matches in the Sky Bet Championship. They also knocked then-Premier League champions Leicester out of the FA Cup in 2017. Rodgers, though, says the Foxes will always strive to excel in any competition they enter as the Northern Irishman navigates a 2021/22 campaign which also includes Premier League, UEFA Europa League and, in the New Year, FA Cup representation. "As it’s always been, I want to do well in the cup competitions," the 48-year-old told the national media. "We reached the semi-final in my first full season here and we would like to do well this season. It’s an opportunity for me, of course, to have a look at some players and give them some game time.
"The players train so well and work so hard, but make no mistake, it’s a competition we would like to do well in."
Although frustrated by the nature of City's 2-1 top-flight reverse at Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, Rodgers was able to see some positives – namely the improved second-half performance at AMEX Stadium and the impact made, from the bench, by winger Ademola Lookman. "I thought we actually started the game well, in terms of control," the former Liverpool and Celtic manager continued. "We had good positions on the field, without ever really threatening the goal, but I think we arrived into good areas and pushed them back.
"That was the first 20-25 minutes, then I felt we started playing into areas where they would want us to go. We started to go central too early and they were able to break away from that. In the second half, we needed a little more penetration.
"We went back to putting an actual winger on in Ade, who I thought was outstanding when he came into the game. Obviously, we gave away a free-kick, which we could defend better.
"That was early on in the second half, but from that moment on, we played with that personality that we need to see in the team and, by the end of the game, we were so unlucky to not pick up at least a point from it.
"The first goal knocked us. We didn’t quite find a rhythm so we addressed it at half-time and I felt, in the second half, we were so much better in the speed of our game, the balance of the team, and we should have got something.
"[Lookman] was outstanding. He gave us exactly what we needed. He was playing inside, but coming wide and combining with Ricky. Just his cleverness and brightness in the game was so good. I was pleased with that.
"It’s just the case of Ade coming in and getting used to how we play and you can see, day on day, game on game, he’s starting to make an impact. He’s certainly one we’ll consider to start during the week."
Leicester were always likely to come across bumps in the road this season with so much football on the agenda and Rodgers was keen to highlight the importance of remaining level-headed. Whether City win, lose or draw, the Foxes manager says they must stay composed for the challenges to come.
"I’ve tried to always never get too carried away when we win and never too disappointed when we lose," he added. "I was much happier today with the team, in terms of control in the game. We’re playing against a team that are a very, very good footballing side.
"They normally build the game very well, but I thought we pressed that and didn’t allow that so many times. Then, for the first 20 minutes and most of the second half, we were able to push them back in their shape and give away very few opportunities in the second half.
"I always analyse the performance level and it’s my responsibility to ensure we can improve with the results."
