Brendan Rodgers has called on Leicester City to build on encouraging aspects of their performances with results in the Premier League as the Foxes prepare to welcome Burnley to King Power Stadium on Saturday.
While City have secured victories over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Norwich City in the Premier League, as well as a Carabao Cup success at Millwall on Wednesday, Rodgers believes the challenge is now for his players to maintain the intensity levels displayed at The Den.
Burnley are next up for Leicester on Filbert Way on Saturday afternoon, but the Northern Irishman began his pre-match press conference in Seagrave by responding to that third round win in south-east London and further underlining the Club's ambitions in all competitions.
"We always try to give every competition our respect," Rodgers told the media. "I’ll always pick a team to look to win the game. We’ve reached the semi-finals of the League Cup before and we want to do well in them. Going away to Millwall was a tough game. Gary [Rowett's] teams are well organised.
"They work very hard and the crowd give them great support. We knew it was going to be a real test, but from a physical perspective, we stood up to the challenge very, very well. There were lots of good moments in the game where we played well and we eventually got two very good goals.
"I’m happy with the clean sheet and to get into the next round."
Quizzed on his thoughts of City's campaign so far, Rodgers admitted that he would have liked more points at this stage. However, by analysing the games and continue to apply themselves well in training, the former Liverpool and Celtic manager has no doubts that more victories will follow.
"It’s something we’ll see over the course of the season," he added. "We clearly deserved something away at Brighton. That was clear in the game. For me, I’ve always got perspective on it. I think, if I look over the course of the five games, it was an excellent win against Wolves.
"West Ham was a difficult evening for us. We beat Norwich and had a close game against Manchester City. Of course, the Brighton one was a tough one to take at the end of that. We’re very focused on improving. I never get too high when we win or too low when we lose.
"I’ve got a brilliant bunch of players who are constantly reflecting and analysing where we can be better and I know we’ll have wanted better results, but it’s over the course of 38 games. I found, especially in the second half against Brighton and in the game against Millwall, it was a lot more like us in terms of our spirit and some of our football and intensity.
"That’s the challenge now. We have to repeat that and make that consistent. It’s still very early. We’d have liked to have won every single game, but the players will make mistakes, I’ll make mistakes, and we’ll do everything we can to be better in our next game."
The Clarets are still searching for their first three points in the Premier League this term, but will have been buoyed by a 4-1 triumph over Rochdale at Turf Moor in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. Jay Rodriguez scored all four goals for the home side in Lancashire.
Rodgers believes that result could boost Burnley ahead of their trip to Leicester, while also explaining the degree of his admiration for visiting manager Sean Dyche, who's been in charge of the two-time champions since 2012.
"We’re all in the game to win," Rodgers continued. "We’re in this business for results. Once you get that first win, then of course, that settles everyone down. No matter what competition it’s in, you like to win.
"It was a good win in the week with Rodriguez getting four goals, which will boost his confidence and the team’s and we anticipate and always expect a tough challenge against Burnley. Sean’s one of the outstanding managers in the country and in the Premier League.
"I think it says everything that people just expect Burnley to be in the Premier League. That tells you everything about his quality as a manager and his players. I know Sean well, he’s a good guy. He works very hard and his teams are always very organised and competitive.
"For sure, he doesn’t get credit for the level of football which they play. They build the game, okay it’s slightly longer, but that’s okay. They play a lot in the game. Their back four players are all competent with the ball. They all have a real high level of technical ability. The game is 4-4-2, but it’s flexible.
"They’ve got players in midfield who can take the ball and pass it. They’ve got players up front who work hard and are honest and have qualities. They make it really, really difficult for you, consistently. They as a team are very, very good and he, as a manager with his staff, they’ve done a brilliant job.
"The feeling always will be is that they’ll be in the Premier League and that’s a great achievement. He’s outstanding and I have a lot of time for Sean, on and off the pitch, and I think he’s done a brilliant job."
Leicester were able to rest players in the capital on Wednesday and many could return to the XI this Saturday. Having that depth could be key for the Foxes across the entire season, Rodgers says, as they compete on four fronts throughout 2021/22.
"That’s what we’re trying to create," the 48-year-old said. "I like to think we’re trying to create a team that’s very well organised, plays really good football, with and without the ball, and a team who are super competitive. In order to do that, you need have to have depth of squad.
"It’s not just about having numbers, it’s also about the quality. It was great the other night that we could make the changes that we did, going to a really, really difficult place to get a result, and do a really solid and professional job in the game.
"We now look towards this game knowing that we can have some freshness back in the team. That’s how it has to be at the very highest level when you’re looking for that intensity. You’re not going to make too many changes, but I think that freshness is important going into each game."
