The Foxes will arrive at London Stadium with confidence and momentum having dispatched Newport County in the Carabao Cup in midweek, booking a place in the fourth round of the competition, following three wins from their last four Premier League games. Ahead of a trip to the capital, City’s manager sat down to address the media in his pre-match press conference held inside the King Power Centre at LCFC Training Ground, discussing a range of topics… Back on form
From suffering six straight defeats to collecting 13 points in the last seven games, it has been quite the turnaround from Rodgers’ side. He pointed to a return to their key principles as a major factor behind getting back on track in the top flight.
“Our results at the beginning of the season weren’t good enough,” the Northern Irishman acknowledged, speaking on Thursday afternoon. “Some of the performances were, but what we’ve now started to do is come back into the consistency of our performance level, which has meant better results.
“Now we have a team that is operating at a really good level again. There’s still a long way to go in the season and we want to go into our final game now and see if we can finish off how we’ve been over the last number of weeks.
“For us, we’ve had a couple of fifth place finishes and an eighth place, and we’ll always look to finish as high as we can and that’ll be no different this season. It’s been a tough start for us, but the players have shown a great mentality and a work ethic. Now they’ve got a real grit to match that, which is what you need at the very highest level.
“It’s easy when you’re winning and doing well. The true test is when you’re not. It’s been a great coaching challenge and a great managerial challenge. I knew the talent we had and then it was a case of bringing it all together again and getting that organisation back in the team. It was just a matter of time.”
Looking ahead to West Ham
Praising his opposite number for the work he has done with the Hammers, balancing domestic competitions with European success, Rodgers also considered the plan of action required in order to gain another positive result in east London.
“David [Moyes] has done a fantastic job there,” the 49-year-old stated. “If you look at them this season, it’s been difficult sometimes in terms of results in the Premier League. He’s having to introduce a lot of new players into the club and the structure. Some influential players have moved on, if you think of Mark Noble, what a fantastic influence he has been.
“Of course, they’ve got European football on top of that. What doesn’t change is that David Moyes is a top manager and he’s proven that at West Ham with where he’s been able to take them over the last few years.
“We’ll just attack the game and be aggressive in the game how we have been doing recently - that’s our idea to look to keep this momentum going. We’re scoring goals away from home and that resilience is back in the team again.
“We’ve been hard to beat, which is important, and we go to West Ham expecting what we always do whenever we play them. They are a good side with some really good players, and we know like against Everton and Wolves in our last couple of away games, we have to play well to win. The team is in a good place and has a good focus.”
Preparing for the winter break
While several members of the squad will embark a FIFA World Cup journey with their countries following the fixture against West Ham, there is still plenty of work to be done behind the scenes in order to ensure the team is in the best possible shape for when the season resumes in late December.
“The planning for it started months back,” Rodgers revealed. “We all knew it was going to be a challenge and over these last few weeks and that’s become more apparent for most managers with the nature of the games and sadly seeing players get injured.
“In terms of preparation, we’ve all known when it was going to finish and what the break would look like. We just prepare as normal.
“It’ll be a nice chance to reflect on where we’ve been at and look back on this early part of the season, but it’s always about moving forward as well and preparing the team for the next challenges, that is key.
“We know we’ve got a really exciting game to look forward to when we come back, but there will be a lot of work to do in the off period.”
