Leicester City will look to get back on track at King Power Stadium on Wednesday evening when Norwich City are the visitors for a Premier League clash that comes three days after a frustrating defeat on Filbert Way at the hands of Everton. That 2-1 reverse ended a 10-game unbeaten home record across all competitions and, with four matches remaining in 2021/22, including two on home soil, another run of more encouraging performances and results would go some way to achieving the aim of concluding the campaign in a positive manner.
Addressing the media in his pre-match press conference at LCFC Training Ground on Tuesday afternoon, the Northern Irishman outlined the key details that the group endeavour to focus on ahead of facing the Canaries in a 7:45pm BST kick-off. “It’s another home game after the disappointment of losing at the weekend in the manner we did,” he commented from inside the King Power Centre at the Club’s training base. “We had been on a decent run at home for a period of time, but we have to move onto our next game. Playing at home, we really enjoy playing there. The pitch is amazing, it allows us to play football.
“Of course, we want to take the three points. Our notion is to really finish the season strong and finish as high as we possibly can. I’m looking forward to the summer to reset and go again, but we want to perform well and take confidence into pre-season and that’s our aim. We’ve got four games left that we want to work well in.
“During my time here, we’ve tried to create a winning mentality and that’s something that I want to see in the performance. It means you are playing with that intensity in the game. It may seem that there is nothing to play for, but for us it’s to finish as high as we can and take a good performance level into the summer.”
Currently 14th in the Premier League standings, there is still an opportunity to end the season in the top half, with two games in hand to play on four of the teams in and around the Foxes in the table. Although lower than the consecutive fifth-place finishes achieved in the previous two campaigns, the former Liverpool and Celtic manager is looking more holistically when assessing the Club’s progress across the last few years and how to ensure they continue moving in the right direction.
“That’s a better way to finish than just let the season drift,” the 49-year-old explained. “It doesn’t stop until the final whistle in the last game of the season. I expect to see a tempo and an aptitude that sees us go out and want to win games.
“This season, because the expectations have really increased because of the performance level over this last couple of years, of course that means the disappointment increases. I’ve always got the bigger picture here of where this Club was at and where we are now. The expectations are there, and we want to keep going with those.
“We’re very much together. We understand the frustrations of this year. It’s not just been on the pitch, it’s been the pandemic and injuries, so that’s been a challenge for us. We also know what we’ve created over these last few years.
“We’re very focused now for the summer in terms of improving the squad. It needs a healthy shake-up. You want to keep your core players of course, but you want to add quality to improve. For us, we’ve got certain player profiles that we need in the team to help us. Everyone is together on that.”
Relegated Norwich were also beaten at the weekend, losing 4-0 at home to West Ham United, but Rodgers was full of praise for his opposite number and knows they will arrive in the Midlands with a point to prove of their own.
“It’s always a tough game,” he added. “Dean [Smith], I’m 100 per cent sure he’ll be getting them ready for promotion next year. He’s a fantastic manager with really good experience. He’ll go into the Championship knowing how to get promoted out of there. He’ll give everything to be able to do that.
“In the meantime, for us tomorrow, they’ve got some good players. I watched the game at Manchester United, away from home they can play with that freedom. If we want to take the three points, we have to show the hunger that we’ve done in games.
“In terms of defending, which in the game in general has been good, but from a set piece position, that’s where our concentration needs to be. If we do that, we’ve got players who can score goals.
“We have some goals and targets but for us it’s about focusing on the level performance more than anything now, and especially in some key areas like in our set pieces, trying to not concede and then, on the other hand, can we score from them?
“In general, the level of our game, I think we need to penetrate more around the final third, so that’s a key focus for us. We arrive in there very well and get into those areas, but when we’re there, we just have to show that extra bit of quality and decisiveness. Hopefully that will give us opportunities to score goals.
“Overall, we’re looking to perform, play with that enjoyment and, when we do that, we play well. Winning is always important, it’s a great medicine in football. It gives that confidence. The confidence in the main from the players has been really good.”
