- Papy Mendy featured in the Premier League for City for the first time since August
Leicester City began 2017 by registering their third away point of the season after a goalless draw with Middlesbrough at a chilly Riverside Stadium on Monday afternoon.
The Foxes looked dangerous from the off as Christian Fuchs had two opportunities on goal either side of a Riyad Mahrez free kick.
Chances for Boro followed, with Marten De Roon, Alvaro Negredo and George Friend all going close, while headers from Leonardo Ulloa and Andy King were saved by Brad Guzan.
But both defences were on top in what proved to be a closely-fought encounter in Middlesbrough, as Leicester recorded their second-consecutive clean sheet in the league.
With a second game in just three days, Claudio Ranieri made five changes to the side that beat West Ham, with Fuchs, Papy Mendy, Andy King, Shinji Okazaki and Leonardo Ulloa all starting.
Islam Slimani missed the clash with Boro through illness, while Danny Drinkwater was not risked having played 90 minutes against the Hammers.
Inside five minutes, some decisive defending from Wes Morgan saw the skipper shield the ball from the advancing Gaston Ramirez, before Okazaki was unfortunate not to latch onto Ulloa’s knock-down shortly after.
Backed by the vociferous Blue Army, City next went close through Fuchs, who dragged a shot wide after Okazaki led a swift counter attack.
The Foxes maintained their pressure and created two more opportunities in the opening stages at the Riverside Stadium. First, Mahrez had his free kick blocked by the Boro wall, while Fuchs miscued from a similar distance.
The lively Adama Traore then created Boro’s first chance of the game, but De Roon couldn’t convert from inside the City box.
King had a free kick collected by Guzan midway through the first period, while Danny Simpson’s timely interception prevented Negredo from getting a shot off.
Negredo fired into the side-netting from a tight angle just after the half-hour mark, before De Roon hammered an effort well over from 25 yards out.
Guzan did well to hold Mahrez’s low drive shortly after, but neither team could break the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes.
The first opportunity after the interval fell to Friend, who drilled low into the hands of Kasper Schmeichel.
King then lifted a strike over the bar from distance with 55 minutes gone, while at the other end, Fabio sent a shot of his own wide of Schmeichel’s upright.
The game began to open up as both sides ventured forward, with Friend this time slicing off target after some good work from the left back.
Ulloa nodded straight at Guzan with just over 20 minutes to play, before former Boro defender Robert Huth was on hand to clear a knock-down from Adam Forshaw.
Ramirez came close again with 83 minutes on the clock, but couldn’t direct his half volley on target, while Ulloa’s late header floated harmlessly onto the top of Guzan’s net.
City continued to threaten in injury time, but after Musa flicked on substitute Demarai Gray’s free kick, King couldn’t beat Guzan with his header.
The point means the Foxes, for now, sit a healthy seven points clear of the bottom three ahead of Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup Third Round tie at Everton.
