- A trip to Manchester City is LCFC Women’s next assignment in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup- The Foxes meet the Citizens in a 7pm BST kick-off at Academy Stadium on Wednesday night- Jonathan Morgan spoke to the media in his pre-match presser to outline his aims for the game- Despite the league being the priority, he says the prospect of a potential semi-final is an exciting one- The manager also provided an injury update ahead of the trip to Manchester
The Foxes travel to Academy Stadium in the quarter-finals of the 2020/21 FA Cup looking to cause another upset after knocking out Manchester United in the fifth round.
Although Leicester’s league campaign is yet to kick into gear, the same processes will remain in place during training sessions at Belvoir Drive, as Morgan looks to reverse their early-season fortunes.
He told the media during Monday’s pre-match press conference: “We are a young team and we want to keep pushing and we want to develop these girls. We’re making mistakes and just want to eradicate those now.
“We have to be open and honest with ourselves and be harder to break down. We’re assessing everything game by game, but our main priority is to focus on the league and this is a bonus game. But it’s a fantastic opportunity to play well against a top, top team.
“We’re just going to take it as any other game, work hard and if we can get something positive out of it, use it as a platform to springboard into Sunday. This game is all about starting to build our own little bit of momentum ready for Spurs.
“It’s a better chance than ever. We always are going to respect every team but we’re still trying to instil into the girls not to fear anyone. That’s going to be the same with Man City.”
Morgan admitted that injuries have not helped the cause and, while he was able to welcome back Shannon O’Brien, Sophie Barker and Hannah Cain to face West Ham United, there are still several fitness concerns prior to Tottenham Hotspur arriving at King Power Stadium on Sunday. Lachante Paul, Abbi Grant, Connie Scofield all remain on the sidelines, with the latter duo still waiting to make their competitive debuts for the Club. “We’ve been patching players up for games,” the manager revealed. “Shannon [O’Brien] came through okay, she’s still got a bit of soreness in her back. You saw we had to take off Hannah [Cain] and Barks (Sophie Barker) off early in the [West Ham] game.
“We’re assessing them again and we’ll probably rest of couple of them for the Man City game. We would have liked a better start from an injury point of view.
“Molly [Pike] picked up a little knock as well, she had a foot issue from Saturday. She was on strong painkillers throughout the game on Sunday and Abbie McManus had a bit of a groin issue. “It just seems like we’re not getting the rub of the green with injuries and it’s not enough to keep them out, but it’s also not allowing them to get to their full potential.”
Although building towards creating some momentum in the league programme is Morgan’s objective, he still sees plenty of value in Wednesday’s tie, especially with a semi-final place at stake.
The LCFC Women manager expects the home side, who are currently without several of their first team players, to come out fighting after a second consecutive league defeat for the former WSL title winners.
He added: “Off the back of the 5-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday they’re not in form themselves at the minute. I know Gareth [Taylor] is working hard behind the scenes with his injury problems as well.
“We don’t know what Man City are going to do or who they are going to play and whether they are going to look to rest players or field their strongest possible XI at this moment in time.
“But they are going to want to get back up and running again and get goals. They are going to be very aggressive and very attacking minded as they always are.
"I think they are going to want to reassert themselves and give themselves some confidence, so we feel we are going to be up against a very strong City team mentally as well as physically.
“We’re going to work hard to get ourselves ready for it and tactically be ready for them. Hopefully we can cause an upset. If we can hold our own and we can stop them playing, it’s the FA Cup and anything can happen.”
