As pre-season moves towards a conclusion, the players have built up a core level of fitness across six friendly fixtures, heading into the opening weeks of the new top flight season.
Speaking to LCFC.com after the conclusion of Sunday’s behind-closed-doors exercise against FA Women’s Championship side Watford, the LCFC Women manager assessed the game and the schedule to date. “We're very pleased with today,” Morgan commented. "Watford played very well, they were very compact and obviously they are going to be very competitive in the Championship after coming up from the Southern Premier Division.
“But you can’t ever read too much into friendlies and I think teams are working on new things, trying new things or trying just to tweak things for themselves.
“From our point of view, we had our own things that we wanted to work on, we had parameters that we set before the game and they definitely came out today.”
The weekend’s encounter at Belvoir Drive was one of three that the Foxes played during the week, also taking on Birmingham City and Coventry United, in order to ensure the whole squad is in peak physical fitness ahead of the beginning of the campaign. “We decided to put three games in this week so the girls could all equally get one 90 minutes each,” Morgan explained. “We felt we just needed that for sharpness.
“We did well in both of those games and were competitive, it was invaluable minutes for all of the girls. I think we saw that today come kick-off.
“We looked sharp, we played some very good football, we were dynamic, we were very strong and our intensity was very high so we’ll just look to keep building on that now.”
Morgan believes it is all serving to enhance the understanding between new team-mates, with six new faces having been added to the squad over the summer months, in preparation for tackling the top flight.
And the focus within the group has shifted to fine-tuning the tactical details during training sessions at Belvoir Drive.
“They are definitely understanding what we want to do,” he continued. “They are definitely understanding what our principles are and how we want to play. The girls have been fantastic in training. The application has been the best group that I’ve had, so I’m delighted with that.
“The girls are looking to improve themselves every day and I must commend them for that. One of the reasons why things are going so well is that the girls have gelled fantastically well this year.
“They settled and there seemed to be an instant connection with this group. It’s put us in a good frame of mind for Aston Villa on the opening day of the season on 4 September.
“Come that first game, we’re all waiting for it. Our anticipation for it is very high and the girls are working tremendously hard to make sure that we can go there to get our first victory in the WSL.”
