- Jonathan Morgan spoke to LCFC TV following Wednesday’s defeat to Everton- The Toffees recorded a 3-1 win in the Conti Cup Group B opener at Pirelli Stadium- Ashleigh Plumptre’s goal proved to be a late consolation for the Foxes- Morgan felt it was a game of two halves with City offering much more after the break
Everton emerged as 3-1 victors in Wednesday night’s Continental Tyres League Cup clash at Pirelli Stadium in Burton to leave the Foxes bottom of Group B after matchday one. City reached the semi-finals of last season’s competition but have work to do following defeat to the Toffees.
Although ultimately in vain, the manager was pleased with the second half performance from the team, which was, he felt, a stark contrast to a disappointing opening 45 minutes.
“It’s a very tough group with Everton, Man City, Man Utd and Durham,” Morgan told LCFC TV in his post-match interview. “Tonight, we are a little bit disappointed because we were not at the races in the first half, but in the second half, we did show our quality and we showed what we can do.
“We can’t be a 45-minute team. We’re working hard, we’re putting the hours in behind the scenes, but it’s just that little bit of consistency to string together a 90-minute performance that keeps eluding us.
“We’ll go back to the training ground and keep working on what we need to work on. All in all, we are pleased, but we know a lot of work needs to be done.
“We always knew where the threats Everton would pose were, but we also knew how to prevent it. I think in the second half that came out a lot more, you could see the difference.
“We just executed it better with Paige Bailey-Gayle up front. I think she gave a lot more support to Jess Sigsworth out of possession. They played a lot closer together in possession, which helped. But we know what Paige has got, her attributes.
“We’re lucky to be able to make subs like that that can have an impact, just not the overall impact that we would have liked.”
Chasing the game for such a long period after being put on the back foot by Anna Anvegard’s goal almost immediately after kick-off, it was always going to be difficult to come back against an experienced top-flight side who were buoyed by the arrival of a new manager.
Morgan felt it was a struggle for the team to get a hold of the game during the first 45 minutes and they paid the price shortly before the break when Izzy Christensen netted a second for the away side.
“It was a little bit frantic,” Morgan admitted. “In all fairness, it was such a heavily deflected shot as well that it kills us, but it’s just the luck you have when you’re at the wrong end of the table like we are at this moment in time.
“We didn’t really put our foot on the ball. The quality on the ball in possession in the first half wasn’t what we expected based on what we worked on. We need to make sure that we retain the possession better.
“I think when we did in the first half, we did open Everton up, but again, in the final third, it was not clinical enough. It puts you on the back foot, it maybe gives the girls a little bit of anxiety thinking the game plan changes, when in reality they have got to stick to the plan and stick to the process and what we’re trying to get out of the game.”
Ashleigh Plumptre did reduce the deficit with eight minutes of normal time remaining, managing to convert after Jemma Purfield’s free-kick hit the crossbar, but it was Everton who had the last say, with Valerie Gauvin scoring their third of the evening in the closing stages.
Morgan added: “The whole of the second half, we were great. We played some good football, we were getting in behind them and Everton defended well and kept their shape very well.
“It’s something we’ve spokeN about in the last three games now – Spurs, Chelsea and Everton – we’ve conceded very late on. And it is because we’re chasing the game. It’s something that is coming back to bite us.
“But it can be so hard when you work so hard to get back in it, and then that sucker punch comes. But it’s something for the girls to keep learning on and something to focus on and something we will address in the coming weeks.
“It’s just not coming the way we want in the games at this moment in time. But it’s nice to get a goal in front of the fans. It was nice to make that game a little bit more exciting for the fans because of that goal.
“We are there or there abouts, it’s just that final bit of composure in that final third that we are working hard on.”
