- Manager Jonathan Morgan previews LCFC Women’s encounter with Everton- The Toffees visit Pirelli Stadium in the Continental Tyres League Cup- Wednesday evening’s Group B clash is a 7pm kick-off in Burton- Morgan provides an insight into the work undertaken during the recent break
The Foxes host Manchester City in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League on Sunday but in the more immediate future tackle Everton in the Continental Tyres League Cup at Pirelli Stadium on Wednesday evening (7pm kick-off).
With two games in such a short space of time, Morgan hopes to try and create some momentum from the clash against the Toffees, to take into their weekend fixture.
Wednesday’s Group B encounter will also be City’s first home game in Burton, which the manager believes can provide fresh impetus to the season.
“For me, it’s about consistency,” he told LCFC TV. “Obviously, we will look to assess from a physical point of view, but at the same time we want to start trying to pick a consistent XI at this moment in time.
“We need those girls to keep gelling, we need them to work together well on the pitch. I don’t foresee many changes between the two games. We just want to make sure we put our best out and keep working hard.
“We’re very lucky to have the opportunity to play games at King Power Stadium and games at Pirelli Stadium, two professional stadiums. Burton will maybe bring something different for us. It will give us the opportunity to have a clean slate. We should be able to improve and pick up the performances that we need to get the results.”
Without a competitive fixture since the meeting with Chelsea on 10 October, there has been plenty of time spent on the training ground at Belvoir Drive, and an opportunity to reflect on an improved performance against the league champions.
“It’s been a really relaxed few weeks,” Morgan continued. “We’ve worked really hard behind the scenes but not put ourselves under any pressure. We gave the girls a few weeks off after the Chelsea game. I think they deserved it after that performance.
“It was a tough game; a lot of lessons were learnt but since then it’s given us a lot of belief that we are starting to transition into a WSL team. And we’ve just worked hard and done a lot of stuff based on us in the international break.
“While we’ve not picked up any points yet, we’re a very competitive team at this level. The girls, while they were disappointed, they were actually quite excited because they thought this could be the start of our journey in the WSL.
“It’s definitely been a very worthwhile international break for us. We just want to build on that positivity now in training, which we have been doing, and most importantly build on that performance.”
Morgan also provided an update on several players who he is looking to welcome back into the squad for the five November fixtures in league and cup, including summer signing Abbi Grant, who is yet to make an appearance after picking up an injury in pre-season.
He added: “It was nice to welcome back Charlie Devlin and Abbi Grant into training last week, which is a big plus for us. It gives us a few more selection dilemmas in the midfield. Sophie Barker is back running again and integrating back into full training.”
Match tickets are available to purchase from the Pirelli Stadium ticket office from 5pm onwards and car parking can also be purchased at the stadium.
