- LCFC Women face Manchester City this Sunday (1pm GMT kick-off)- The Foxes’ face the Citizens at Joie Stadium- Shannon O'Brien previewed the Barclays Women’s Super League fixture- All the information on how to follow Leicester this weekend can be found HERE
A 1-0 win over Everton moved City up to seventh in the Barclays Women's Super League standings, and O’Brien said the team were pleased to get back to winning ways.
“It was a bit of a relief (the Everton game), because we knew we had to get the points and step up, like we did,” the forward explained. “Everyone was delighted, and it was all good vibes after the match.
“We’ve got a new song, that we got from Julie [Thibaud] and Janice [Cayman] that we sing if we win. I don’t think people know what it means, but it comes from Janice's time at Lyon, and it gets everyone shouting and celebrating.”
O’Brien went on to talk about her role in the squad, coming from a place that had her fulfilling multiple different roles in a team that had different targets.
Now able to gain a better understanding of what Willie Kirk wants from her, she is looking forward to getting more games under her belt.
She added: “The progress of the team is exactly what we wanted, especially this year, we’ve got ambitions to be as high as possible and I think we’ve got the squad to achieve that.
“Personally, the last year has been difficult, but I’ve been trying to get a bit of regularity with my games, and I’ve been playing in a few different positions in my time here so it’s nice to cement a role.
“I’ve enjoyed being coached on it and it’s a nicer role now that we’re more of an attacking side. When we used to be in relegation scraps, it was tough to affect the game, but now it’s easier for us attackers to develop and become sharper.”
The Leicester team has come on leaps and bounds this season, in terms of recruitment as well, adding plenty of recognised talent to the setup, including Cayman, a two-time UEFA Women’s Champions League winner.
“Janice for me is someone that I learn from and look up to,” O’Brien explained. “She’s won the Champions League, and she’s got bags of experience so she’s someone we look up to.
“But you can say that the whole squad is filled with top international talent now, and are capable of adding different things and competing at a high level.
“There’s so many of us now asking for a spot in the team, and fighting for that, so it’s good to push us all on, but maybe not so good for Willie that must pick the team.”
On the last visit to Joie Stadium, the Foxes found themselves two goals up, before winning a penalty shootout in the Continental Tyres League Cup.
The ability to take the game to the league’s top side is commendable to the team, but O’Brien understands training and keeping up this high level of performance is needed to ensure the three points.
“We went 2-0 up against Man City last time we played them, and we probably wouldn’t have expected that last season,” City's No.27 admitted. “But we can nowadays, with the talent and belief that we have.
“This year you can see the progress; the last WSL game was 1-0, and we could’ve got something from it. It was high intensity and much improved from us.
“We know that we can compete, but just making sure we can do it for 90 minutes, continuing to develop and hopefully we can get something on the weekend.”
