Leicester City in the Community ran a Future Lionesses event
Partnered with the FA, the event aimed to encourage girls to keep playing sports
LCFC Women’s Aimee Palmer dropped by to inspire the 16 young people in attendance
A new football session will start following the successful event
Over the Easter break, Leicester City in the Community held an event with the aim of enabling girls to continue to take part in sport after they reach the age of 18 – a year where sport participation in girls drops off significantly.
On the day, participants attended workshops from external companies Love4Life and Sociological, on safety and the art of peace, respectively, at the city centre event in partnership with The FA.
Meanwhile, girls also had a go at skilled football-based games including footgolf, bazooka, panna cage and football tennis, culminating with a 3 vs. 3 round robin Queen of the Court game with Foxes star Palmer joining in.
“It's been great to come down and see all the girls having so much fun enjoying such initiatives as this,” said Palmer, speaking at the event. “I wish this was more readily available when I was a kid, so it's great to see Leicester City in the Community doing this for the girls. I think it's so important that they get involved in sport at such a young age.”
Leicester City’s charity champions girls’ participation in sport, offering a number of sessions both on and off a football pitch to encourage positive participation.
Many young women demonstrate character building from their sessions, with an example being Ruby, who grew in confidence during weekly football session in Beaumont Leys. Meanwhile Michelle, who attended the event, was pleased she could be a part of it.
“It's been a wonderful experience to get to see other people play,” she said. “Lots of people from different areas can come and join and have fun and not worry about it.
“Football is therapy to me, it can get your mind off of stuff; if you’re feeling overwhelmed, sad, angry - I feel like it's a good thing for you to relieve that stress.”
As a result of this successful event, Leicester City in the Community is running a new after school session every Thursday during school term for girls to play football.
