- Ben Petty speaks to LCFC TV following the Development Squad's 2-0 defeat at Sunderland- The Foxes must wait until later this week to learn their fate in the Premier League International Cup- Petty was disappointed with the nature of the goals, but some of the attacking play impressed him- City next face Manchester City in Premier League 2 on Monday, live on LCFC TV (7pm kick-off)
Goals from Lee Connelly and Elliot Embleton for the Black Cats sunk City at the Stadium of Light to leave their chances of reaching the Premier League International Cup Quarter-Finals in the balance. However, Petty says there were some aspects of the performance which pleased, although he admitted their finishing must improve in future.
"It was five minutes of madness," Petty said, discussing Sunderland's two goals before half-time. "Two really poor goals which was unlike us in all competitions this season. We’ve paid for that tonight.
"We created most of the chances, we had most of the possession and we’ve probably dominated 75 per cent of the game and we’ve come away with a 2-0 defeat.
"It’s hard on the lads because they’ve had just a fantastic run. It’s our job now to pick them up because we’ve got a big week next week."
Petty admitted his frustration at the nature of both goals, with defensive errors playing a key role, but he also stressed his appreciation of the usually high standards of City's two centre-backs.
"We made the error with the first goal with the long ball, which is unlike Sam [Hughes] and Knighty [Josh Knight] and, again, another poor error just before half-time," he added.
"It changes your team talk because we were actually quite happy with the way we were developing the play in the first half.
"We had to chase it a little in the second half and I think we could have played all night and we wouldn’t have scored. It was one of those nights."
Work will now be done at Belvoir Drive to rectify the issues which presented themselves in the North East ahead of the visit of Manchester City to Holmes Park in Premier League 2 next week.
He continued: "We just said to the players in there that we thought we got into much better positions. We need to show more quality. We’re still working hard on that on the training pitch.
"If we’re going to compete and try and stay in the last two competitions [Premier League 2 and the Premier League Cup] this season, we need to be better in that final third.
"We’ve come really used to winning and that [19-game] unbeaten run was fantastic. A part of development for young players is coping with it not going so well though.
"We’ve got to pick ourselves up and we’ve all got to get back to basics. I’m sure we will, they’re a great group of players and they’ve been fantastic all season."
