- Midfielder Molly Pike previews LCFC Women's start to the 2021/22 season- The Foxes will compete in the Barclays FA Women's Super League for the first-ever time- City face Aston Villa at Banks's Stadium on matchday one on Saturday (12:30pm kick-off)- Pike is excited by the challenges which the new campaign will pose for Leicester
The Foxes get their debut campaign in the top tier of women's football underway on Saturday when they travel to Banks's Stadium to tackle Aston Villa on matchday one (12:30pm kick-off). Pike is one of seven new faces to have signed this summer, but she is already feeling at home. The close-knit culture which is being built at the Club, plus the level of facilities on offer, has helped that transition, the former Everton and Bristol City midfielder said this week, during her pre-match press conference at Belvoir Drive.
"We’ve gelled really well," the 20-year-old explained. "I didn’t expect to feel so settled so quickly. It was really nice. I feel like all seven players feel the same, which is a really big thing in this club. The culture here is really good. The girls really welcomed all the new players and me really well into the team.
"I feel like I’ve been here for ages because I know the girls so well. You get in, get on with your day, and you know you can talk to the girls and the staff about anything. It’s a fun family vibe here."
LCFC Women will play the majority of their home games at King Power Stadium this term and have enjoyed their first pre-season at Belvoir Drive, an elite training complex a short journey away from the Club's home on Filbert Way. That can be a real advantage for City this term, Pike believes.
"The facilities here definitely improve the culture a lot because we’re all around each other," she added. "We have priority over everything as it’s just us, just the women’s team, here. We can eat together, we can gym together and it gives us a good advantage in the league this season.
"It means so much to me and to all the girls (to play at King Power Stadium). We don’t expect to be sharing the stadium, but to have that privilege is massive. That will help us play our football. It puts a statement out to other clubs to show that Leicester’s a massive family club and we all work as one.
"It’s not just the men’s side and the women’s side. We’re all together. The facilities are second to none. To come here and have everything for ourselves is massive. I feel we can have a great season because of the facilities."
Now all focus is on tackling Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the new season and Pike hopes her experience playing in the WSL can help her colleagues, but is also looking forward to learning from her new team-mates in various areas of the game.
"We’ve been focusing a lot on the game and we know what they’re good at, what their strengths are," Pike continued. "We’ve been working on how we can go against that. All the girls are really, really excited to play. I think it’s going to be a great game, a really tough competition, but I’m looking forward to it.
"I think I can help give advice about what the difference is. The difference is in quality, in speed and the concentration that you need in the WSL. I feel like I can tell them that and help them and they can also help me, some of the older players. I’m still a young player myself.
"They'll have different experiences from the Championship that they can give me so I feel like we can all help each other with what we’ve all experienced. We’re here to compete with the teams and show them how we can play. We want to bring our game to them."
