- LCFC Women defeated West Ham United 3-0 in the WSL on Sunday- It was the Foxes’ third straight victory across all competitions- Ashleigh Plumptre says everyone is keeping their feet on the ground- The defender scored City’s second goal after Natasha Flint’s opener
The Foxes entered Sunday’s fixture in Burton with back-to-back wins under their belts and the confidence that provided was evident from the first whistle as they put pressure on the away side, forcing a mistake after just two minutes when Natasha Flint pounced to break the deadlock. Plumptre herself doubled the advantage, heading home Jemma Purfield’s free-kick with nine minutes on the clock to notch her first-ever Barclays FA Women’s Super League goal, coincidentally at the same end of the Pirelli Stadium pitch as her maiden strike of this campaign. “It was a great game all the way through, first half and second half,” the delighted 23-year-old told LCFC TV in her post-match analysis of the victory. “I think that’s the biggest thing for us, we want to make sure that we perform all the way through. “We wanted to come out fast and, in the past, we have done that first half and then second half not, but we wanted to make sure it was consistent. Obviously, we got the first goal pretty quickly and we had a chance before that as well, so with that, we just wanted to make sure that we kept the pressure on and then maintained that all the way through.
“For me, in training, we’ve practiced set pieces quite a lot and people keep saying I’m the target and then I end up being the decoy and everyone else scores! That is fine, it was just a bit of a shock, but I’m happy with it.”
Freya Gregory’s goal early in the second half, her first since joining on loan from Aston Villa in January, sealed the points, while it was the shutout at the other end - City’s third clean sheet in six WSL games - that really pleased Plumptre and the defence. The centre-back explained: “For me, I much prefer that (a clean sheet) than scoring. It’s more of a defender’s mentality and we said that in the second half, obviously, we want to get more goals, but for us it’s about keeping a clean sheet.
“It just shows that if we can do it against an opposition like that, then hopefully we can continue doing that against other good teams.
“I actually really like the physical aspect of the game. I think all of us as a back three, our centre-backs, we like getting into a physical battle. Sometimes we have to learn from giving away silly fouls and things like that.
“But I think that’s another part of the game that we did well today, we competed physically, and we didn’t give away cheap fouls that could lead to goals or threatening attacks from them.”
A fourth top-flight triumph moves Leicester onto 12 points and eight clear of the relegation zone, also rising above Everton and into their highest position in the WSL to date. But no one in the Foxes camp is getting carried away, with plenty of football still to be played.
The Nigeria international added: “It’s taking one game at a time because we’ve obviously gone through the start of the season, where it was really tough for us. Losing a lot of the games, that can have a big impact on the changing room.
“So, we’re really just cherishing every good performance that we put in and making sure that we don’t get complacent with that, because at the end of the day, relegation is a big fight that we’re in. We want to just climb the table and prove to people why we’re here.”
