_- LCFC Women’s Ashleigh Plumptre speaks ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Everton- City face the Toffees at Pirelli Stadium in the Continental Cup (7pm kick-off)- The Foxes defender is looking forward to playing in Burton for the first time_- She says the atmosphere created by the home fans can provide a huge boost
The Foxes will begin their FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup campaign against Everton, aiming to record a maiden victory of the campaign following five defeats in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League for the newly promoted side.
A record home attendance of 4,473 watched Leicester’s game against Manchester United, creating a special atmosphere on Filbert Way, as did another strong crowd of 2,137 for the fixture with Tottenham Hotspur.
Plumptre believes the support from the stands could make all the difference to help push the team on to success, having already experienced a vocal following in City’s previous home fixtures this term.
“We’re very lucky to be playing there and at King Power Stadium,” the defender told LCFC TV. “For the girls that were here last year, we’ve gone from Quorn, playing on a 3G pitch, to King Power Stadium and Pirelli Stadium, it's brilliant. It’s the perfect stage for fans and other people to see what we can do.
“The fans really make a huge difference and, although we haven’t got the results so far, when we come back into training and after games, we all talk about how the fans have given us that extra push.
“I vividly remember in the Tottenham game when we were trying to get a goal back and every time it felt like we had momentum and were getting forward, you could hear the crowd every time we stepped forward and it’s something that I don’t think we would have got if we were still at Quorn.”
The 23-year-old also provided an insight into the work that has been going on at Belvoir Drive during an extended break from competitive action.
City have not taken to the field since the narrow 2-0 defeat at Chelsea in early October, though there were plenty of positives to take from that performance at Kingsmeadow in which they kept the champions at bay for over 80 minutes.
She explained: “The international break was good for us because we finished with Chelsea and I think we were all obviously disappointed with the result but really optimistic with our performance.
“As much as it was nice to get a mental reset with the break, we were almost wanting another game because we all felt really good after the Chelsea game.
“Everything has stayed the same, the training schedule has been very similar. We had a little bit of a break but we came back in, had a friendly and just kickstarted from where we left off really.
“We’ve been making sure we hit certain targets and we’ve come straight back in, we’ve not eased back in, and everyone’s doing really well for it. We all have that mindset.”
The Foxes face Manchester City in another important WSL fixture at King Power Stadium on Sunday, the second of five fixtures to come in November, but Plumptre believes it is important to take a considered approach.
“Working from the Chelsea game, we have taken things from that to use in the next couple of games, especially against tough opposition,” the centre-back added.
“We have a lot of games in a short space of time, so we have to focus on one game at a time but also not get too ahead of ourselves thinking about which team we’ve got.
“It’s just to focus on Everton, then Man City and then pick apart those games and keep getting better and better because I think that’s what we’re doing at the minute.”
Match tickets are still available for the fixture HERE and can also be purchased on the gate, along with car parking at Pirelli Stadium.
