Claudio Ranieri believes the formation Leicester City played in the first half proved problematic for his side during the on Sunday.
Opting for a 4-3-3 stratagem, Ranieri's Foxes started positively, but found themselves 2-0 down at half-time following strikes from James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez.
City had a huge opportunity to pull one back through Wes Morgan, but the skipper couldn’t convert from close range and the Saints extended their lead through Dusan Tadic from the spot.
Speaking to LCFC TV at full-time, Ranieri said: “I want to say that the two last matches (Chelsea and Southampton) were my mistake. I changed the shape to help the team, but the players didn’t recognise my ideas.
“We wanted to win and we wanted to do something good. For the players, it was important for them to keep going and improve.
“I wanted to close their movement because they wanted to keep possession of the ball. With the diamond, we made very good things but after we conceded two goals and I preferred to go back to the shape (4-4-2) that they under stood better.
“Often we come back from 2-0 down and also we had a chance with the skipper (Wes Morgan), but today everything was wrong.
“The penalty, in my opinion, was not a penalty, but they deserved to win 2-0 so it’s the same. We wanted to create some chances and we did, but not in the final third.”
