- Claudio Ranieri thrilled to see his side progress to the Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round with a 3-1 victory over Derby County
- Andy King, Wilfred Ndidi and Demarai Gray scored as the Foxes beat the Rams after extra-time at King Power Stadium
- The manager urged his team to use the victory to give them a boost in the Premier League
- They will travel to Millwall in the fifth round on Saturday week
After watching his side surge to an impressive 3-1 extra-time victory over Derby County to march into the Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round, Claudio Ranieri urged Leicester City to keep building momentum.
The Foxes faced the Rams in a fourth round replay at King Power Stadium after the teams played out a 2-2 draw at Pride Park last month, but they needed 120 minutes to win the battle this time around.
Ranieri’s men were bright in the opening stages and captain for the night Andy King headed them into a deserved lead just after the break. However around the hour mark, Abdoul Camara’s free kick took a wicked deflection off Ben Chilwell to take the game into extra-time.
Substitute Wilfred Ndidi then put the Foxes back in front with an unforgettable left foot drive from range before Demarai Gray sealed the win after dancing through the Derby backline and finding the top corner.
It was a win that set up a fifth round tie at Millwall and after making 10 changes to his team, the manager urged his players to take that momentum into the weekend’s clash with Swansea City in Wales.
“It’s important now to keep going, not to think about tonight’s goals,” said Ranieri. “It was important to see how new players played. Often we play at the training ground, but it’s another thing to play in the FA cup against Derby. They played face to face and we scored more than them.
“For me it (the win) is important for Leicester. When I speak, I speak for Leicester. It’s very important this victory and to go through in the cup. It gives us confidence. It was a difficult match. When we scored, we played better. Then we scored again and we kept the ball well.
“I want to say thank you to our fans because they supported a lot our players and we won. They were important for us tonight.
“It was good to see the players who haven’t been involved so much play well and play with personality. [Bartosz] Kapustka played well. [Yohan] Benalouane and [Marcin] Wasilewski were good and if you can imagine, Daniel Amartey arrived at 5.30am this morning and played 120 minutes. Unbelievable.”
