- Claudio Ranieri believes a good performance at Sevilla could be the turning point for Leicester City this season
- The Foxes take on the Spanish outfit on Wednesday evening in the UEFA Champions League Last-16
- Ranieri confirmed Islam Slimani will miss the tie in Seville
Claudio Ranieri is hopeful that Leicester City can turn this season’s fortunes around with what would be a huge result at Sevilla on Wednesday evening.
For Ranieri, against Jorge Sampaoli’s men will be one of the most difficult challenges of the season.
But that is only fuel for his Foxes, who according to the Italian, may well get the 2016/17 campaign back on track with a positive result at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.
“The Premier League is a priority when there is a match in the Premier League,” Ranieri said ahead of the game. “Now there is a match in the Champions League. The priority is always the next match.
“Tomorrow (Wednesday) could be the turning point. It could be everything. If we win, something could change. We need one match like this.
“We know in our mind we are the underdog. If you see in the last 10 years what Sevilla achieves it’s amazing.
“They are used to staying at the top. They have good players but we are ready to fight and ready to play our football.”
The City boss stressed the importance of performing well in the first leg and cited his side’s displays last term as something that they must replicate on Wednesday if they are to come out on top.
Ranieri continued: “Of course the first leg is always important to understand but we don’t have time to understand. We know they have good layers and are a good team.
“They move the ball and attack well and change position. We’ve studied them a lot and we must play very carefully like we did last season or some matches this season.
“If we play our football it could be a very good match.”
Ranieri went on to confirm that striker Islam Slimani will not feature against Sevilla, as he continues his recovery from a groin problem.
He added: “Slimani is not fit. He doesn’t come, also on the bench he doesn’t come.”
