Claudio Ranieri took great pleasure in seeing his Leicester City side secure another clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough on Monday afternoon as he urged them to build on the performance.
After a 1-0 Premier League success over West Ham United last time out, the Foxes were impossible to break down for the home side at the Riverside Stadium as they moved, at least temporarily, seven points clear of the bottom three.
City did test Brad Guzan in the Middlesbrough goal but themselves weren’t able to find the telling touch to take the victory on a day that Ranieri saw plenty of positives from his improving Foxes.
“The performance was good,” reflected Ranieri at full-time. “[We showed] Good spirit and we got one point. A clean sheet too – our second clean sheet in a row and it was good for us.
“Of course Middlesbrough pushed a lot but they were dangerous for just a few crosses and we were so solid. I’m very, very pleased with all the great spirit that we showed.”
And while the victory wasn’t forthcoming, the manager was pleased to see progress in his side’s performance from the last meeting with Middlesbrough in November – a 2-2 draw at King Power Stadium.
He added: “I want to score a goal, of course but this season we conceded so many goals and we must improve this. For this reason we go back, solid and strong with good personality. We won a lot of aerial battles. In the first match [in November] they won a lot of second balls but today we won lots of tackles.”
The manager made five changes to his starting XI for the match, including a start for Papy Mendy in midfield, who performed well as he continues his comeback from an injury picked up against Arsenal back in August.
“Mendy made an outstanding performance and I’m happy,” added Ranieri. “He suffered a lot with his ankle injury but now he’s ready and I have one player more.”
