Beloved Club Chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, staff members Kaveporn Punpare and Nusara Suknamai, and pilots Eric Swaffer and Izabela Lechowicz passed away when their helicopter crash-landed outside King Power Stadium three years ago today (Wednesday).
They were all members of the Leicester City family, which, united in grief, came together as one to remember them in emotional scenes outside the Club’s home in the weeks to follow.
Ahead of the first fixture to take place on the same date – the visit of Brighton & Hove Albion in the League Cup – the Foxes’ first team squad laid flowers and took time for reflection in tribute to the Club’s former patriarch and his travel companions at The Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Memorial Garden.
Floral tributes were laid at the tribute well, containing permanently sealed parcels of hand-written notes from supporters, placed outside the stadium in the aftermath of the accident.
The garden pays tribute to everyone we lost that night three years ago and offers a quiet, peaceful area for remembrance and contemplation for all on Filbert Way.
A ceremony involving Buddhist monks, acknowledging Khun Vichai’s personal faith, offered an opportunity for all those in attendance to reflect and remember the day the Club lost a figure who brought so much joy and pride to the people of Leicester.
Khun Vichai’s leadership enabled the Club to create memories few thought would ever be possible, following promotion from the second tier with a magnificent Premier League title triumph in 2016 – still regarded as one of the greatest-ever moments in sporting history.
That legacy continues to the present day under the dedicated guidance of Chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, with the Foxes, managed by Brendan Rodgers, going on to lift a maiden FA Cup crown last season and securing successive seasons in European competition.
It was Khun Vichai’s vision which inspired the completion of the Training Ground in Seagrave, a world-class headquarters for the Club’s first team and Academy operation, offering a truly elite working environment in north Leicestershire.
Further landmark projects are planned for the King Power Stadium site, transforming Leicester City’s home venue into an iconic destination fit for the mid-21st century and beyond.
Everybody at Leicester City remains bound by their shared memories of Khun Vichai and united in their commitment to continuing his precious work, as the Club strives to be the very best it can be both on and off the field of play for generations to come.
Over his Chairmanship, Khun Vichai personally donated over £4M to local causes, while often also dedicating his own time to more modest causes, away from the public eye.
Supporting our communities, especially as the world emerges from the near-two-year-long COVID-19 pandemic, continues to be a key objective for the Club.
Khun Vichai was a man defined by ambition, love, and generosity for others. Honouring that legacy has since become our mission. Khun Vichai, Kaveporn, Nusara, Eric and Izabela are in the thoughts of everyone at Leicester City Football Club today and every day.
Always in our hearts.
The Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Memorial Garden is open to the general public during daylight hours and can be accessed behind the East Stand of King Power Stadium.
