However, that particular rarity occurred exactly eight years ago today (25 March) at King Power Stadium, where a header from Kasper Schmeichel appeared to clip the underside of the crossbar and bounce over the line. Heading into the match, the Foxes sat first in the Championship table after 36 games, but Burnley were in close pursuit and threatened to deny Nigel Pearson’s side the title. City had not suffered a defeat in the Championship for over three months, and were on an unbeaten run of 12 matches as they sought to right the wrongs of the previous season’s play-off loss to Watford.
Leicester were clear favourites before the match, and faced a Yeovil side that occupied a spot in the bottom three, but it was indeed the visiting outfit that took the lead on 22 minutes via Joe Ralls’ free-kick.
It remained 1-0 heading into half-time, but City turned up the heat after the interval and had 27 efforts compared to just the four that came in the opening 45 minutes.
Throughout the game, they dominated with 67 per cent possession, and began to pepper the Yeovil goal in the second half, but it wasn’t until the 91st minute that their advances paid dividends, although the source of the equaliser was somewhat disputed after the full-time whistle.
Denmark international Schmeichel thundered a header towards goal, connecting sweetly with a Danny Drinkwater delivery, and while the ball appeared to cross the line, it was Chris Wood who would be credited with the injury-time strike.
Then assistant manager Craig Shakespeare said afterwards: “I don't really care who scored! They are both claiming it. Kasper has been looking at the video evidence. "When his header came down off the bar, I didn't see the linesman signal the goal so I am pleased that Chris made sure. They can fight over it in the dressing room!”
Ultimately, the source of the goal did not really matter. City still had a three-point buffer to second-placed Burnley, and went on to win the Championship title to gain promotion to the Premier League – a trophy they then lifted in glorious fashion two years later.
