- Brendan Rodgers reflects on the contributions of Leicester City’s Academy graduates during a 3-3 draw with SC Braga- The Foxes guaranteed qualification from UEFA Europa League Group G by claiming a draw at Estádio Municipal de Braga- Harvey Barnes and Luke Thomas were both on target for their boyhood clubs in Portugal
Thomas, an England youth international, added to Three Lions senior Barnes’ superb finish during a frenetic clash with Carlos Carvalhal’s men at Estádio Municipal de Braga. In addition, midfielder Hamza Choudhury, another Academy graduate, played 90 minutes in the Group G draw, and Rodgers was pleased they were able to gain further experience against high-quality opposition. “We’re obviously a club that gives young players a chance,” the Northern Irishman told LCFC TV as his side qualified to the UEFA Europa League’s Round of 32. “Harvey’s was a really good finish. “He needs to do more off the ball to really maximise his qualities, but he works hard and hopefully that side of his game will continue to improve, but he needs to do more in the game. His finish was really good.
“I’m delighted for Luke, because he’s a young player – 19 years of age – coming in and showing that personality and that hunger and ambition to get in there and score was great. I’m delighted for him.”
While the current period has no doubt tested the ability of Rodgers’ squad, the busy nature of City’s fixture schedule will allow them to build momentum, the manager says.
He added: “That’s the type of season that we’re in, but we’re loving it. We’re loving the games. We’ve got a point here now and now we’ll go away.
“We’ll have to recover quickly and get ready for our next game against Fulham.”
