- Brendan Rodgers looks ahead to a ‘massive game’ against Napoli later this week- The Foxes travel to Naples to conclude their UEFA Europa League group campaign- Three points would secure their spot at the top of their pool
The Northern Irishman was speaking after Sunday’s 2-1 reverse to Aston Villa at Villa Park, where Harvey Barnes had given City the lead before two goals from Ezri Konsa secured all three points for Steven Gerrard’s side. However, Rodgers now says focus will be on their European campaign, with their sixth and final group match taking place later this week at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples against Serie A giants Napoli.
He said: “[It’s a] massive game for us, but it’s what we wanted. We qualified for European football in this last couple of seasons and we’ve really enjoyed it.
“This is what it’s about. We’re top of the group and we go in with a real strong mindset into the game and we’re looking to get the result we need to qualify.”
Currently top of their pool, the Foxes know a victory would secure them first position as they look to advance to the knockout stages of the Europa League for a second-straight season.
“It’s a huge challenge for a club like ourselves, with our squad,” he said. “However, we go into every game looking to play how we want to play, play our football.
“It hurts today (Sunday) because we did a lot of good things in the game in the first half, but with the goals we conceded, it’s killed us really. We need to be better.”
On his squad, he provided a fitness update on centre-back Jonny Evans, who appeared to be in some discomfort during the second half at Villa Park: “He did great for us in the game. I think he’s fine.”
