- Leicester City beat Rennes 2-0 in the UEFA Europa Conference League on Thursday- Goals from Marc Albrighton and Kelechi Iheanacho give the Foxes an aggregate lead in the last-16- Manager Brendan Rodgers praised his side's resilience to wrestle control of the game in the first half- He also discussed the importance of both Albrighton and Iheanacho to Leicester
For the opening third of the clash on Filbert Way, it was the Ligue 1 visitors who dictated play, but the Foxes gradually built a foothold and were ahead on the half-hour mark – courtesy of a stunning strike from Marc Albrighton into the top corner from the edge of the area.
With seconds to go in second-half stoppage time, meanwhile, Albrighton turned provider for substitute Kelechi Iheanacho to stretch City's advantage before next Thursday's second leg in Brittany. At full-time, Rodgers was pleased with how his players turned the tide to secure an important result.
"We gave the ball up too cheaply," the Northern Irishman told LCFC TV, initially summarising the early stages. "At European level in particular, you’ve got to look after the ball and technically we didn’t move it quick enough and play quick enough.
"We lost the ball in dangerous areas, but then once we started to find our passing, find our rhythm, we started to switch the play and move them side-to-side. The space started to open for us and we were thankfully able to exploit that a number of times."
Albrighton's first European goal since the winner in a last-16 UEFA Champions League tie against Sevilla in 2017 set the Foxes on their way. For Rodgers, the 32-year-old's worth to City cannot be overstated, with the former Liverpool manager seeing similarities with one of his ex-players.
"He's invaluable," Rodgers explained. "I said to him the other day, I signed James Milner for Liverpool, and James has gone on and proven what I wanted him to be at Liverpool – a player who can play outstandingly well in a number of positions. Marc’s a younger version of that, but in his own way.
"He’s very similar. He’s played at right-back, left-back, right wing… and, tonight, you see what he gives. He’s so honest in the game. It allows us to press the game and defend well and tonight he got the goal and an assist. It was a fantastic performance and he’s a player of real influence in our squad."
Iheanacho was also rewarded for his patience with a maiden European goal of the season and his manager outlined the importance of squad depth as Leicester head into a crucial period of their season.
"That’s the nature," the 49-year-old added. "You can’t play in all the games. We’ve got so many games. We’re playing virtually every midweek.
"They have to share and they have to be a team player. You can see the energy that he, Ade (Ademola Lookman) and Madders (James Maddison) brought into the game to get up there for the second goal and I was delighted for him to get his finish. It was a wonderful finish."
