- Ayoze Pérez receives praise from manager Brendan Rodgers after netting on his return to the side- The Spaniard scored the opening goal at Bramall Lane in a 2-1 win over Sheffield United- Rodgers felt Pérez delivered an ‘excellent’ display in South Yorkshire
Pérez’s first strike of the 2020/21 season proved to be an instinctive finish as he fired home from inside the six-yard box, following up Marc Albrighton’s blocked effort on 24 minutes.
The Spaniard’s first start since mid-October saw him line up alongside Jamie Vardy in attack, and Rodgers, following a 2-1 win over Sheffield United, felt City’s No.17 deserved his opener at Bramall Lane.
Rodgers told LCFC TV: “We changed the system today and played with two up front, so you’ve got Jamie [Vardy] who runs in behind and you’ve got Ayo (Ayoze Pérez) can come in underneath.
“I thought he (Pérez) was excellent. He’s been unfortunate not to have played as much, but the team had been doing well and, in some moments, he wasn’t in the squad. I felt this was a game to give him that opportunity, and it was a really, really good finish.
After a frustrating spell of games, the Foxes’ victory in South Yorkshire saw them move up to third in the Premier League, having accumulated 21 points from 11 matches.
Reflecting on his side’s league position, Rodgers said: “It’s such a long season. Our ambition is to finish as high as we can.
“Today was a great victory for us on the back of a tough week. I’m really proud of the players for the performance they put in.
“They’re doing so well, and we’ll look at the players coming back – that’s really going to help us also. There are only 11 games gone.”
