- Brendan Rodgers credits Kelechi Iheanacho for the work rate he displayed against Fulham on Wednesday- The Nigeria striker opened the scoring in the 2-0 Premier League triumph at Craven Cottage- James Justin then completed a great team move with a goal of his own before the break
An irresistible pass from James Maddison found the head of Kelechi Iheanacho, who on 17 minutes opened the scoring at Craven Cottage by netting his first Premier League goal of the season. On the stroke of half-time, meanwhile, James Justin got himself on the scoresheet after collecting Maddison’s pass, skipping past goalkeeper Alphonse Areola and slotting in to double his side’s advantage. When asked whether Iheanacho has given him a ‘selection headache’, Rodgers said: “He probably gave himself a headache with the header! It was a great header. He’s really had to adjust on it.
“It was a superb ball in by Madders (James Maddison) and for a boy that hasn’t scored in the league [in 2020/21], he showed great confidence with the contact.
“So, we’re all delighted for him. It’s not just his goals, it’s his work rate. He gives everything to the team and yes, it was a brilliant win for us.”
Justin’s strike saw him round off a superb 26-pass move just moments after Kasper Schmeichel had pulled off a save right out of the top drawer to deny Tosin Adarabioyo. “It was a wonderful goal – the composure in the team, how we played through their lines with great quality,” reflected Rodgers.
“Then, I mentioned to JJ (James Justin) in the game… Our game at home, we were done on the counter-attack, so we had to make sure we blocked that up.
“We said to JJ, in moments, you go and to be fair to him, probably the one moment he did go, he timed it perfectly, so that shows his football intelligence.
“It was an absolutely brilliant goal and I’m delighted with it.”
