- Leicester City were beaten 3-2 by Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League- Goals from Patson Daka and James Maddison had the Foxes ahead on Filbert Way- Steven Bergwijn’s double turned a dramatic game around in added time- Brendan Rodgers felt the home side undid all their good work to concede twice late on
Finding themselves in a winning position with seconds to go in stoppage time, the Foxes conceded twice in a unbelievable end to the game to see the points snatched away from them at the death.
Speaking to the media in his post-match press conference, the manager felt they were the masters of their own downfall after goals in each half from Patson Daka and James Maddison edged the home side ahead at King Power Stadium, either side of Harry Kane’s leveller.
“It’s very disappointing,” the Northern Irishman admitted. “The last 90 seconds, we spoiled 93 minutes of really good work. There were some really good bits of play. You know you’ve got to defend well at times against Tottenham with the quality they have. We scored two really good goals.
“The second goal in particular gets us in a really good position in the game and then we concede a disappointing equaliser. There's a couple of duels that we lost that we should win and then it’s really naive from the kick-off to concede so late in the game.
“It was really disappointing. We had lots of really good moments in the game, but we gift-wrapped the goals and give them to Tottenham and, against top players, you can’t do that.”
Rodgers felt it was uncharacteristic of his side to lose the lead they held and allow Steven Bergwijn to net twice in the last few seconds of the game. Now it is all about learning from those key errors, he believes.
“It’s football. It’s hugely disappointing when you’ve put yourself in a great position, you’ve worked so hard, it looks as if you are going to get the three points and to come away with nothing hurts. After 24 hours, you’ve got to move on and that’ll be the idea.
“We can look and analyse the game and see the errors that we made and what needed to be better to see that game through. It’s the nature of football. The players gave everything tonight, we just made two really poor decisions in key moments in the game and it cost us.
“What we spoke about before, if a team does score, we normally go direct to see if we can catch the backline celebrating that they’ve scored. You’ve seen that away at Leeds when we scored straight from kick-off virtually and here against Manchester United.
“But you certainly don’t run through the middle of the pitch and pass to any of the other bodies. Youri [Tielemans] knows that, he’s just obviously keen to get to the goal quickly and obviously trying to get something from the game. That’s one, with more experience, you have to settle for a point at that stage if the time is virtually up.”
The impressive Maddison, meanwhile, now has eight goals in his last 11 appearances and after registering 15 goal involvements already this term, and is showing the form that Rodgers knows he is capable of.
“James’ efficiency is at a really high level,” the 48-year-old explained. “He’s creating goals and scoring goals. That’s his job in the team. But not only that, he’s working very, very hard. I’m delighted with his level and what he’s been showing.”
Another positive was the long-awaited return of full-back James Justin, who came on as a second-half substitute to play a competitive fixture in the first team for the first time in over 11 months, following his ACL injury.
Discussing the England Under-21s international defender’s recovery, Rodgers added: “He looked great. He’s shown that in training, he’s been moving really well. He’s been strong and it was just a case of us wanting to get him out on the pitch to play.
“He’s obviously played 35 minutes tonight and got a great reception from the crowd and hopefully that will give him a huge boost going forward.”
