- Brendan Rodgers reflects on Leicester City’s tactical approach to Saturday’s 2-0 loss against Manchester City- The Foxes were beaten for the first time in five matches across all competitions- Rodgers was happy to see Kelechi Iheanacho commit his future to the Club prior to the match
The Foxes allowed Man City to have plenty of the ball, most notably in the first period, however they stood strong to head into the break level with the Premier League leaders.
While Benjamin Mendy and Gabriel Jesus were on target in the second 45 minutes to ultimately win it for the visitors, Rodgers felt City coped well in large spells.
“I think the pattern against Manchester City is always the same,” he said. “Whatever team they play, they will normally dominate the ball, and they will have the ball like today – 57 per cent possession.
“They’ll always have that, but for us, the flexibility in terms of how we play, you open up against this team and they will really hurt you with the sheer quality that they have.
“Like what we did in the first game (5-2 win at Etihad Stadium), you’ve got to be tight, well-organised and then when you have the ball, look to be effective. We weren’t quite as effective tonight.”
While disappointed with the loss, Rodgers was pleased that striker Kelechi Iheanacho, who had scored seven goals in four games heading into the clash with Man City, extended his contract on the morning of the match.
“He’s been excellent,” the manager added. “He’s a very important member of our squad. Today, he gave everything considering he was back late on Thursday night from Nigeria – him and Wilf [Ndidi].
“He’s a very important player for us, he’s been brilliant of late and we’ll keep that going with him.”
