- Brendan Rodgers reacts to Leicester City's 2-0 triumph over Southampton on Saturday evening- James Maddison and Harvey Barnes found the net for the second-placed Foxes at King Power Stadium- Rodgers believes Barnes is growing in confidence after the England midfielder scored his 10th goal of the season- The 47-year-old also credited Kasper Schmeichel as the Dane made his 400th appearance for the Club
James Maddison's well-executed opener, in the first half, got Leicester City on track, before Academy graduate Barnes wrapped up an 11th league win of the season in the latter moments. As the Foxes moved up to second in the Premier League, one point adrift of Manchester United, Rodgers was asked about Barnes' improvement in front of goal, with 10 goals to his name already this term. "It's just confidence," the Northern Irishman explained, speaking to LCFC TV. "I always felt that once he gets into the areas and then once he scores goals, he will get the feel for it, the bug for scoring. "I thought when he was away tonight, there was no doubt. Maybe when I first came in, in that first six to eight months, he would go and he wouldn’t have that same confidence in him.
"But now, when he’s away, I fancy him to score in every game because he’s getting into good areas and he’s now getting that composure.
"His numbers are very, very good and we’re only at the halfway point."
Schmeichel, on the other hand, skippered the Foxes and kept a clean sheet on the occasion of his 400th competitive appearance for the Football Club across all competitions. Rodgers was particularly pleased that the three-time Danish Footballer of the Year was able to celebrate the landmark with a shutout and elaborated on the impact he's had on his own time at Leicester City.
"He’s been a big influence," Rodgers added. "He’s one of the top goalkeepers in the world. To have played 400 games here is a great testament to his professionalism and his quality at such a great club.
"I’m delighted for him. He’s kept a clean sheet on his 400th game and obviously can celebrate with a win."
That success over the Saints was the first act of a double-header at King Power Stadium, with Chelsea due to visit Filbert Way on Tuesday (8:15pm GMT kick-off).
Ahead of that clash with the five-time Premier League champions, Rodgers is excited by the challenge of facing Frank Lampard's men - especially with players starting to return from injury.
"I will look forward to that," the 47-year-old continued. "Tonight was really important so we go into Tuesday with real confidence.
"We’re playing against another very good team, but we’ll now recover, looking forward to analysing Chelsea and seeing how we can pick a strategy to win the game.
"I’ve said you want competition in the squad and with the players being fit, that gives us that competition.
"I’m really pleased with that victory and all the players will contribute between now and the end of the season."
