- Leicester City and Brighton & Hove Albion drew 1-1 at King Power Stadium on Sunday- Patson Daka put the Foxes ahead, before Danny Welbeck's equaliser- Manager Brendan Rodgers praised his side's 'courage' in the latter moments- The squad will now be able to recover from a demanding period during the winter break
Patson Daka fired the Foxes in front seconds after the restart at King Power Stadium, before a headed goal from Danny Welbeck got one back for the Seagulls. It's a result which leaves City 10th in the Premier League ahead of the 2021/22 campaign's scheduled winter break. Rodgers was disappointed with some of the specific parts of Leicester's defensive game after taking the lead at Filbert Way, but generally speaking, the Northern Irishman was pleased with the resolve on show in the latter moments in particular. "There’s a natural reaction when you go in front where the other team gain a bit of an edge to the game," the 48-year-old said. "When you have something, of course you protect it a little bit, but technically, we didn’t play well enough in that period.
"Instead of passing the ball, we were getting rid of it and that’s nothing something that I’m used to seeing in my teams. That’s an area we must be better in, but I have to commend the players for keeping going until the very end.
"We were playing against a good side that have had some really good results this season and we wanted to close the game out. However, we didn’t, but we showed a great courage mentality to keep fighting until the end and in the end we have to settle for the point."
Leicester are still out without Jamie Vardy (hamstring), Jonny Evans (hamstring), Ryan Bertrand (knee), Timothy Castagne (thigh), Ricardo Pereira (leg) and Wesley Fofana (leg). Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi and Papy Mendy are also away with their nations at AFCON, although the Nigeria duo will now return after the Super Eagles were beaten by Tunisia on Sunday. Rodgers says missing those players, plus the ones which have since recovered at various points of the season, will naturally have an impact on City's season.
"It's been a challenge for us this season, that's the reality of it," he added. "It's been challenge after challenge in terms of injuries and everything else. If you'd have watched us in those first couple of seasons, you'd have seen dynamism in how we've worked and how we've played.
"Of course, when you have the numbers of that we have, and that quality out, then of course it brings a different dimension to the team. The players are fighting. We're sat in the table where we deserve to be. We're mid-table. We've had some really good wins, some disappointing results.
"We'll keep fighting and keep working and keep looking to progress."
Now, though, with the winter break upon us, there will be a two-week period until the Club's next outing, a fourth-round tie at Nottingham Forest in the Emirates FA Cup. The squad will be allowed to rest and recover over that spell to prepare them for the tests to come, Rodgers says.
"The players will have a rest, they're deserving of that," he explained. "It's been a challenging season for us in so many ways up until this point. They'll have that chance to recover for a number of days with their family and rest and then we'll get back in with a good preparation for the Nottingham Forest game."
