- James Maddison’s return to the starting XI pleased manager Brendan Rodgers- The City No.10 made his maiden start of the campaign against Arsenal on Wednesday- The Carabao Cup Third Round clash at King Power Stadium ended in a 2-0 loss to the Gunners
After coming off the bench against both West Bromwich Albion and Burnley in recent weeks, Maddison started from the off in the third round Carabao Cup tie with the Gunners on Filbert Way.
The City No.10 was selected by LCFC Radio summariser Gerry Taggart as the Man of the Match for his creative influence, and after hitting the post in the opening 45 minutes, Maddison also received praise from his manager
“He was unfortunate not to take the lead,” said Rodgers of Maddison. “It was a great move and then he finished off a wonderful piece of skill.
“[He was] unfortunate not to score in that moment, but it was good for him. He came on at the weekend and then obviously to get minutes under his belt tonight was important.”
Undoubtedly disappointed to bow out of a competition the Foxes have won on three occasions, Rodgers still gained confidence from the way his side acquitted themselves against a talented Arsenal outfit.
“I think what was great to see was how co-ordinated the team were,” he added. “When you play against Arsenal, they build the game really well from behind, so you have to be really co-ordinating and concentrating with your pressing.
“We won the ball numerous times, high up the pitch and got into some really good positions. So, for the players, the full XI of new players starting, to show that cohesion - I was pleased with that.”
