_- Leicester City sit third in the Premier League table following Saturday’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace__- Brendan Rodgers says his side are looking to take that fighting spirit into the clash against Arsenal on Tuesday evening (8:15pm kick-off)- Rodgers also praises the team’s performances throughout the whole season_- Live coverage of the trip to the Emirates Stadium is available on LCFC Radio and LCFC TV
After securing City’s first victory since the restart against Crystal Palace, Rodgers now wants his side to kick on in the remaining five games and ensure a positive end to the 2019/20 season.
Kelechi Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy were among the goals on Saturday to boost City’s Premier League tally to 58 points from 33 games.
Speaking to the national media on Monday, City’s manager commended his players for the way they have performed throughout the campaign, which has seen the Foxes maintain a healthy league position.
“I was pleased with the win and there were lots of pleasing elements to the performance,” the Northern Irishman commented in his virtual pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to north London.
“What the players have done up to this point has been remarkable. I think that’s something that I’m pretty clear on and getting the perspective of it all.
“If you think about the two teams in front of us, two of the greatest teams the Premier League has produced, and for us to be second in the league from a defensive perspective and third highest goalscorers in the league, is remarkable.
“Of course, we’ve had a little blip in the last few months, which is absolutely natural for a very young squad, but for us to be in the position we’re in, the players have been brilliant.
“The league is so competitive, not just with the so-called top clubs, and for us to be in amongst it shows the level of performance and how well the guys have done all season.”
Rodgers opted to move to a three-at-the-back system against the Eagles, handing Ryan Bennett his Leicester City league debut as a substitute, which brought success in the form of three points and a clean sheet at King Power Stadium.
“I’ve always liked my teams to be play out of different systems, but the style will always be the same,” Rodgers continued. “What was important for me was that we got back some creativity in our attacking structure.
“We train and look at it within the squad and have done numerous times this season. You’re obviously analysing the opposition, if a team sits deeper then there’s a certain structure that can help you break through that quicker than other structures.
"Having the flexibility to do that, the players adapt to that very well, but it’s each game, you have to look at the opponent as well, but it was certainly much better from us at the weekend.”
With just five fixtures remaining in the season, the 47-year-old is taking each game as it comes and telling his players to remain level-headed during the upcoming run-in.
Rodgers added: “They’re all big games and hopefully we can finish them off, but we’re not going to get too emotional.
“Of course we know where we want to finish and that will be our measure at the end of the season, but the focus on the next game is huge from now on in.
“We have to fight for the result. We go into every game to win, that’s our objective, and let’s see where it takes us. The focus is on ourselves and bringing the right performances.
“Can we show that fight and that spirit we showed at the weekend and really take that into the [Arsenal] game?
“Even though games are coming thick and fast, as they have since we’ve come back, we’ve got a strong mentality and we’ll look to demonstrate that in each of the games.
“We’ve shown over 33 games now, our talent, and we may be missing some players who have helped us along the way, but as a squad we’re very focussed on achieving it and we will fight until the very last whistle to finish as high as we possibly can."
