_- Leicester City were beaten 2-1 at Everton on Wednesday evening_- Brendan Rodgers says a disappointing start was his side’s downfall at Goodison Park _- He believes the penalty decision that went against City was ‘very harsh’_- Crystal Palace are up next for the Foxes, in Saturday’s 3pm kick-off at King Power Stadium
City remain third in the Premier League standings following Wednesday’s night 2-1 defeat away at Everton and welcome Crystal Palace to King Power Stadium for Saturday’s behind-closed-doors fixture (3pm kick-off).
Rodgers believes a slow start against the Toffees at Goodison Park cost his side, who recovered well in the second-half, but did not manage to find an equaliser. Richarlison had netted early on for the home side before Gylfi Sigurðsson converted a penalty, awarded for handball against Wilfred Ndidi, following a lengthy VAR delay.
“We started the game well, but very quickly within that first 15 minutes we are 2-0 down,” Rodgers reflected in his post-match interview with LCFC TV.
“The first goal was soft and the second goal I thought was very harsh. I think the wait tells you everything, it was a minute and a half nearly for them to get the decision and we’ve had a number of those that we haven’t got, so we’re disappointed with that.
“After we conceded the first goal, I wasn’t overjoyed with the performance for the rest of the first half, we need to be better than that, we need a greater mentality within the team in order to get a result.”
However, the Northern Irishman did take heart from the second half performance, which saw the visitors dominate but only find the back of the net on one occasion.
Kelechi Iheanacho’s fourth league goal of the season and ninth in all competitions, which came soon after the break, proved only to be a mere consolation for the Foxes.
Rodgers continued: “Of course, in the current environment, it’s difficult to get yourself back into it, but in the second half, we were much better in our approach of the game. We made some changes at half-time and then we had a much better tempo and a better rhythm to our game.
“We got an early goal in the second-half and were playing at a much better speed, but it ends up a disappointing result for us.
“We had real good pressure [after the goal], got into some good areas, but just didn’t have that final piece of quality that allows you to score.
“The problem is there is too many times. We are trying to rescue the game at half-time, either through changes or changing tactics, so it’s something that we need to be much better in how we start the game, because it’s not to the level that we require. We nearly got something out of the game. We’ll have to recover now and it makes Saturday very important for us.
“We had 45 minutes against Chelsea and we had a second 45 tonight, so if we put it together, we could be much better. But there’s no doubt that over the 90 minutes, we need to have a better performance level.”
