- Leicester City beat Newcastle United 4-0 at King Power Stadium on Sunday- The result leaves the Foxes sat eighth in the Premier League table- Manager Brendan Rodgers was pleased by the collective effort in the performance- The Northern Irishman also commented on the spirit on show from his side
Youri Tielemans hit a brace while Patson Daka and James Maddison also found the net at King Power Stadium as City's defence kept their first Premier League clean sheet since the opening day of the season. It's a result which also moves Leicester up to eighth in the top flight standings. Speaking afterwards, Rodgers was keen to focus his praise on the entire matchday squad, who both attacked and defended as a unit in order to earn a valuable three points. "I was pleased with the collective," he said. "I think of all the players we have missing and the tough schedule we’ve had with those players unavailable.
"Attacking-wise, we’ve looked a threat. Some of our play has been very, very good, but we had to rediscover that mentality to defend with the players we’ve had out. To keep the clean sheet was very important for us today and that was for everyone. The attacking players scored some great goals.
"We put some good pressure on to create the penalty. For the other three goals, we defended forward with lovely combinations and it just showed the unselfish nature of the team with a couple of the balls which were played to create the goals. The team thoroughly deserved that win."
The Foxes have been without several players due to injury throughout the season and more in recent weeks due to illness. Despite a fixture schedule which is among the most demanding in the league, Rodgers was also delighted with the quality on show from his side on Filbert Way.
"It’s very difficult and very challenging when you have so many players who aren’t available," the 48-year-old added. "You’re always having to try and find a way. For us to be sat in eighth with all the issues and challenges we’ve had this season, it’s a real testament to the players, the mentality and their spirit.
"I’m hoping that as the season goes on, we can get some of these players back and find that consistency. It’s something which has been a foundation for us. In order to do that in the Premier League, you have to be collectively good and have players available.
"They’ve been brilliant in a very challenging period. They showed their spirit today in what was a real test of their mentality."
