- Brendan Rodgers has sent a message of thanks to the Leicester City supporters ahead of Sunday’s game with Manchester United (4pm kick-off)- The Northern Irishman says the support his team have received this season is phenomenal- He added praise to the squad for their efforts in securing a top five finish in the Premier League- Rodgers also reveals the players are in high spirits going into the weekend’s clash at King Power Stadium
City host Manchester United in the last fixture of the Premier League campaign, (4pm kick-off), with the two teams separated by a single point in the current standings.
Although the Blue Army are unable to attend King Power Stadium for the season finale, Rodgers believes his team can still draw on their support from home, as they look to secure a top four finish.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference with the national and international media on Friday, the Northern Irishman says they aim to do the fans proud one final time in 2019/20.
“The team will be giving everything, like they have done all season,” Rodgers said. "It is a shame that they can’t be there because it could have been a real deciding factor for us, but they are not, although they’ll be with us in spirit.
“We aim to do them proud and now we have the chance to bring them the biggest prize in terms of qualifying for the biggest cup competition in Europe.
“So we’ll be doing everything we can, thanking them for the support we’ve got all the way through the season, which has been, for us, amazing, even though they haven’t been in the stadiums these last few months.
“I’m very gratified by all the support we’ve had throughout the year.”
Rodgers also gave an insight into his plans for the pre-match talk to the players, ahead of the final 90 minutes of the season, which the Northern Irishman revealed will be full of praise for their performances.
He continued: “For me, it’s along the lines of no matter what happens in this game, I’m very proud of what [the players] have done this season.
“Where we started and now we’re at, going into the final game, I don’t think the players can give me any more.
“We could have had better results in some games, but that boat has sailed. Every team will look back on results throughout the season and think they could have got more points and got more wins, but that’s long gone.
“What they’ve done has been absolutely brilliant, up until this point, and now they have a chance to make a result that will be heard around the world.”
The Foxes head into the fixture against the Red Devils knowing that a win will secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League and Rodgers says a full week of preparation has aided their chances of achieving that aim.
“For us as a squad, I think the objective is pretty clear,” the City manager added. "The key thing for us is we wanted to analyse the Tottenham game and even though we lost, there was still a lot of good things that happened in that game that could really help us for this game against Manchester United.
“The mood around this team is very good. This has given us a great opportunity to press the reset button again physically and mentally. The players have trained today (Friday) and we’ll arrive into our final session tomorrow and then we’re all in on Sunday.
“For us, we know we have to win the game, that’s the mentality that we go with, but we don’t need to win it in the first minute.
“We have a team that has shown we can play both sides of the game, we can be creative and score goals and be clever.
“But it’s about looking at the strategy of the game and knowing what it is we need from the game and then obviously looking at the various types of timings on where we need to go all in on the game.”
