- Leicester City came out on the wrong side of a 2-0 scoreline at Anfield- Diogo Jota’s brace proved the difference for Liverpool on Thursday- Brendan Rodgers felt there were some positives from City’s display- He is now keen to focus on the test West Ham United will provide
The travelling Foxes were defeated by two Diogo Jota goals in either half, the first arriving just over 10 minutes before the interval, after Leicester had battled well and looked competitive in the first half an hour of the Anfield contest.
But it was the manner of that opening goal which irked Rodgers, who felt it could have been defended much better in a crucial moment of the game. Once it hit the back of the net, the hosts were in control and rarely looked like relinquishing that from then on.
"It's a disappointing goal and we have to recognise that,” he admitted post-match. “It's definitely something for the summer, really, in terms of players who can defend the box with a greater aggression.
“We've lost the marker and when you give Virgil Van Dijk, who is 6ft 5in, an opportunity, then he's going to do what he does, which is hit the target and they get the goal from the rebound.”
One of the positives was the performance of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who featured for the full 90 minutes in the middle of City’s midfield, alongside Boubakary Soumaré and then later Youri Tielemans, just as he did when Leicester overcame the Reds in the Premier League in December.
The Shepshed-based Academy graduate has now played over 700 minutes of top-flight football so far this term and made 21 appearances across all competitions for Rodgers’ side, as he continues to increase his influence on matches.
“Against Liverpool, in the home game, he was outstanding as well,” the 49-year-old enthused. “He's a player that is hungry and that's what we're saying. It's not a coincidence that he, over this last couple of months, has come into the team.
“He's played with hunger and that ability to prove a point and that's why his performance level is consistent. He's fighting and that's what we need to have.”
Looking ahead to the weekend’s test, the Northern Irishman believes the Foxes faithful can help to push the team on when West Ham United visit King Power Stadium in Sunday’s 4:30pm GMT kick-off.
“The crowd will drive us,” City’s manager added. “Of course, we're not happy with the result, but the performance gives us encouragement. Now we've got to come together at the weekend.
“There's three important points there for us. If we can take the spirit and add an extra bit of quality, then hopefully we'll have a much better result.”
