- Leicester City registered a 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday- The Foxes returned to third in the Premier League after their 20th league victory of 2020/21- Luke Thomas and Çağlar Söyüncü found the net for Leicester in the North West- Rodgers was delighted to see defensive players contribute in the final third
Luke Thomas netted a rocket on the volley in the first half and, while Mason Greenwood levelled for the Red Devils, up stepped Çağlar Söyüncü midway into the second period to score a powerful header to confirm the Club's first win at the Theatre of Dreams since 1998. The quality of the two goals particularly pleased Rodgers and the Northern Irishman revealed at full-time that they were the result of work on the training pitch as City's defenders look to contribute more in attacking positions. "It’s an amazing goal," the 48-year-old told LCFC TV, discussing Thomas' opener. "It’s what we asked him to do. He needs to get forward more and be more aggressive in his game, but what a finish. To come and do that at Old Trafford, it was a sensational goal. "It’s a great move, they worked the ball onto the side, exploited the space in behind, and he’s finished it with great composure. There will be a bit made of Man Utd playing young players, but we’ve got a young player at 19 scoring his first [Premier League] goal and another of 20 years of age (Wesley Fofana) in the backline. "They’re all young players that are developing and, as you can see, they’re developing very well. I’m happy for Çağs (Çağlar Söyüncü). He needs to score more goals from set pieces. He’s great in the air. He’s got good movement to create the space and he finished really well."
Rodgers made two changes to his line-up at Old Trafford and deployed a 4-4-2 system, in possession, but the former Liverpool and Celtic manager says that decision was based more on the availability of players than anything else.
"The fluency of the team is important," he added. "We’re normally a team that play with the ball in one shape and then defend in a different shape.
"It was the personnel we had, the fittest team we had available, and they worked their socks off."
